Could clopidogrel and aspirin together cause this kind of deep pain

Posted by moey2720 @moey2720, Sep 28 2:10pm

I have taken Clopidogrel and 2 81mg Ecotrin aspirin daily for many years (about 20). Within the last year I have had chronic horrible pain in my right arm ranging from 3-4" below my elbow to 3-4" above and sometimes all the way up to my upper outside shoulder. I've had x-ray of my shoulder and nothing was found, but the pain continues. It is most noticeable at night when I go to bed. Sometimes it is just intense burning pain.

I was concerned about blood clot(s) and talked to my Internist about getting a duplex Ultrasound of both arterial and venous areas of the Right arm to see if there could be a deep bleed without any surface visible bruising; I'm having the two ultrasounds tomorrow and am anxious for the results.

Is there any research available regarding this possibility? If so, I'd like a link so I could read up on it. Anyone else have this type of pain to figure out? Thank you.

@moey2720 Ouch! Since x-rays have shown no issues, if the ultrasound shows no clots, maybe the next stop should be an orthopedist to see if you are dealing with tendinitis- sometimes mine manifests as a burning sensation you described.
Bleeds severe enough to cause pain usually show some bruising on the arm unless you are very heavy or muscular.
Please let us know what the tests show.

Your prescriber should be your source of information but this is what I found online. Please check for yourself...
FDA Drug Safety Communication on Plavix (fda.gov)
Clopidogrel increases the risk of bleeding, and taking it with aspirin may raise that risk further. (fda)
Suddenly stopping antiplatelet medicines can put you at risk for heart attacks, strokes, and blood clots. (fda)
Clopidogrel label precaution, reported by MDedge (link)
In the CURE and CAPRIE studies, adding aspirin to clopidogrel raised bleeding risk and reduced benefit in patients aged 75 and older. (mdedge)
Interaction summary from HelloPharmacist (link)
Major bleeding was more common with aspirin plus clopidogrel than with aspirin alone in clinical trials, and people on both should be monitored for signs of bleeding. (hellopharmacist)

@kjoed53 Thank you for your information. Yes, I've read many many articles, and so forth.

I am wondering if there are others with a similar problem and if they have had Ultrasounds and did the US reveal any clues as to what might be going on.

I'm having my US today both vein and artery, and see my Cardiac surgeon on Thursday so I will have more information soon. Perhaps it is totally unrelated to the Clopidogrel, but I wondered if others had similar issues.

Thank you very much for responding.

Do you have allergies?. I have found over the years anytime. I see a new and improved on a bottle I cringe.. What did they do? What did they take away? What did they add? You could also just have developed an intolerance to that one brand of aspirin.
Just an idea, I wish you the best
