Having L4-L5 Spinal Fusion - what to expect?
I’m hearing horror stories about Spinal Fusion surgery. What kind of recovery and setbacks can I expect?

@ladyawarrior Hello. From your post, it sounds like you have been living with this pain for some time and are afraid of undergoing the fusion. I had a TLIF L4/5 fusion on May 29 of this year and I couldn’t be more pleased with the result. I had significant pain in my lower extremities when standing and walking for any extended period of time only getting relief while sitting. This was particularly problematic for me as I was a healthy and fit 75 year old who regularly engaged in some form of daily exercise. The surgery was a god sent because it took all of the pain away leaving slight numbness in my lower extremities which will likely resolve overtime. My recovery was also very easy. Within two weeks I was off of any pain medication which in my case was Tylenol. What I attribute the ease of my recovery to is, a healthy weight, five months of PT prior to surgery, and adhering to post operative instructions including the importance of daily walking not to mention that I was lucky to get a highly skilled surgeon.
Believe me, I was terrified of having to undergo a fusion but I really feel it gave me my life back as I am back to my daily exercise program pain free.

4 Reactions@hughebo2 hello I appreciate your comment and so happy it has done you some good ! We all heal differently and believe me Im hoping for the best in my recovery and for the long run praying for no pain entirely although Im aware certain things may still come about because that’s just the nature of this condition!!! I will do all I need to do safely because trust me I need and Want my LIFE Back bigger and better !
My intent was to share what I felt worked in my favor and also to let you know the procedure and recovery can have a good outcome. I was also given the 70% success statistic. It was better than that. I wish you all the best and hope you have a very good outcome too.
I’m in total agreement with @hughebo2 ! I had L3, L4, L5 fused, and I couldn’t be happier. My whole life came to a standstill, and I got my life back. Yes it was a ton of work and I lined up help after surgery live in for a couple weeks and then cousins and friends to come help me for two months on and off. I live by myself and have a dog so I was frightened, but it was the most amazing experience and I am now heading back for more fusion. The areas outside of my fusion board the front of added stress, but I knew that going into my surgery and my surgeon and I agreed on the more minimal approach because I needed mobility for my work in the street. If you want to see the kind of work that I did before and after surgery look up my name lori escalera. I couldn’t be happier to have been able to continue on with my work after my fusion surgery in 2018. The best advice I can give anyone is to have gotten multiple opinions and have an orthopedic surgeon that you trust and love! I told my surgeon he can’t retire till I die, cause I wouldn’t know what to do without him! He has done a couple more surgeries for me afterwards like in my cervical spine.

1 Reaction@hughebo2 I agree with you. I am 70 yrs old very active and had fusion L3-L5 on July 23. It definitely gave me back my life. I also had a cyst removed. For 5 years I did injections until they didn’t work. I primarily had pain down the back of my legs, made everything difficult. The first 3 weeks were tough but I walked every day. I also walked prior to surgery even though it was hard. At 6 weeks all my restrictions were lifted. I was able to bend move more etc. I was definitely scared but I felt I didn’t want to continue as I was. Best decision!
@loriesco abd if u have no friends or family to care for y then what
@northstar25
Thank you for sharing your experiences with your spinal fusion surgery. I have the same problem with the L4 slipping over the L5 vertebrae. and, coincidentally, I am also a 72-year-old female. I am scheduled for spinal fusion surgery in 5 weeks - an A-lif one day and surgery from the back the following day.
I have stenosis, Spondylolithesis, degenerative discs, scoliosis, arthritis and fibromyalgia.
I’m told my recovery may be especially painful because of the latter condition.
You’ve given me some hope because I have never had any kind of surgery and am terrified that this one might be excruciatingly painful and permanently debilitating.
I would love to ask you some questions if you wouldn’t mind, and yes, I’d love to know what surgeons you used.
Thanks, Carol
