Did prostate cancer treatment lower your white cell blood count?
I, subsequent to very recent radiation and hormone therapy for localized prostate cancer, visited my internist for annual comprehensive bloodwork and physical. During this visit, he advised that my white blood cell counts were quite low, well below “low minimum”. He was aware of my PC therapy.
I think it’s pretty obvious that this would open me up to troubles with any type infections as these cells provide first defense against same.
Shouldn’t this have been made clear to me as a likely consequence of treatment? I guess I’m just surprised as it’s not in much of the literature. It was brought up on this board but nothing discussed since 2023, so…….

A year after 44 radiation treatments and 4 months of Lupron for my T3b prostate cancer, I was still having major side effects with no measurable PSA and a testosterone recovered from 280 to only 111. My urologist diagnosed me as hypogonadal both 10 years before and for a year after treatments. Also my Hgb, Hct, Lymphocyte % auto, and absolute Lymps had fallen steadily from normal to significantly below normal minimum standards. I was prescribed testosterone at 100 mg/ 2 weeks and within a week all my side effects basically went away, and I began to have some arousal even at this very minimum TRT dosage. In 4 weeks, I will see if my blood work also gets better and if my PSA stays undetectable. I have also read that a study of thousands of men for 10 years showed low testosterone men had a 40% shorter life expectancy. Low testosterone does not stop cancer but does cause serious lifr threatening side effects especially for older men like me at age 84.

6 ReactionsKill B and T cells are Lymphocytes that can attack cancer. I only had one Lupron injection 4-3-26 and finished my Radiation Therapy 6-10-26. My should be 850-3900 Lymphocytes dropped to 592. Up to 959, 9-3-26. Some say the should be over 1000. I started taking B12, Folate, Iron & Zinc. My should be 4.20-5.80 RBC's are 4.26. My 13.2-17.1 Hemoglobin is 12.9. 39.4-51.1 Hematocrit is 39.3. Testosterone can raise these blood values. After Lupron my Total Testosterone fell to 9, 8, 5, 5 and then 4. My Free Testosterone is < 1. I understand that 10-20 is an ADT Testosterone target, but 4! I understand that people stay on ADT as long as they can take it. I can no longer handle the extreme fatigue & weight gain. Yesterday I took 0.02 ml (2 mg) of Testosterone cypionate. I asked my Radiation Oncology doctor when I could start taking supplemental testosterone again. He said never. I used to take 12 mg to maintain a Testosterone of 200. ADT does seem to be beneficial during RT, but if all I have left is Biochemical PC, wouldn't I want some Lymphocytes to kill it? My PSA was 0.03 in 2009 after my Radical Prostatectomy. A high of 15 earlier this year. Down to 0.83, 9-3-26. I will be tracking my future PSA & Testosterone. I take Finasteride since it keeps Testosterone from turning into Dihydrotestosterone. Dihydrotestosterone is what causes the prostate to develop embryologically.

1 Reaction@pesquallie: I agree. Death by diabetes or heart disease, is not better than a little PC. I am taking 2 mg (0.02) Testosterone Cypionate every week. I am hoping to raise my Total Testosterone from 4 to 10-20. My last PSA was 0.83. I think I might be feeling better after two days. I believe my blood Testosterone peaks about two days after injection. I use a 10 ml "Tuberculin" syringe. (see comment below) Time after RT should cause my PSA to continue to drop, Supplemental Testosterone results in a higher PSA result. I would alternate having my blood tested on the day before my injection at 9 AM (natural Peake time), and two days after my injection.
