Anyone had abdominoperineal resection (APR) at Mayo, Rochester?

@zekeandbelle, welcome. I added your question to the Visiting Mayo Clinic support group as well as the Colorectal Cancer support group.

I'm tagging fellow colorectal/anal cancer members like @gap1 @jcronk3547 @annejacobsen @pjebp @patsyh who have experience with colorectal or abdominalperineal resection surgery at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. You are in good hands at Mayo Clinic. And yes, there are logistics to work out and you probably have loads of questions.
Do you have a surgery date? Have you downloaded the patient portal?

thanks Colleen, that is so very kind of you! I will be having radiation/apr surgery there and trying to figure out logistics... I live 10 hours away. I'm not sure of dates yet, just trying to find info? especially regarding recovery!!! hope someone does something really kind for YOU today!!

Hi! I am a 19 year stage 3C rectal cancer survivor. I was 39 (2 weeks from 40) years old at diagnosis. I am from Western Nebraska and chose to seek treatment in Rochester, MN at the Mayo. Best decision I ever made. I had (have!) a husband and 2 daughters that were in 9th and 7th grade and choosing to live for 6 weeks in Rochester for radiation was not an easy choice! But, I did it. Radiation for me wasn't too difficult as far as feeling ill. I was mainly just tired. I was on capecitabine at the same time, so my stomach had some issues. But compared to full out chemo, it was a piece of cake. Everyone is different, though. I found a short-term apartment and rented it for my 6 week stay. I'm not sure it still exists as one. I believe it was called Riverside apartments or something like that. What questions can I help to answer?

@annejacobsen 19 years!!! yay for you Anne!!! I appreciate your kind reply and information. I looked for something called "Riverside" and nothing pops up with that specific name, but I'll keep looking! thanks again for taking the time to reply...

What caused your APR ?
I am having severe abdominal pains & after several tests, the GI
doctor still can't figure out what the problem is.

@kayraymat, APR stands for abdominoperineal resection and is a type of surgery. It is a major surgery that removes the lower colon (sigmoid colon), rectum, and anus, resulting in a permanent colostomy.

An APR is most often used to treat cancer that is very low in the rectum where removal of the rectum, anus and sphincters is necessary to treat the cancer. Less often, an APR may be used to treat severe inflammatory bowel disease, including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

@kayraymat colorectal cancer... although I have had three previous colonoscopies in my life...I;m old!! . nothing ever showed up before... hopefully they will figure you out... pain is so debilitating!!
