Anyone else dealing with the Exactech recall?
Passing this along in case it helps someone. Exactech recalled a large number of its knee, hip and ankle implants (Optetrak, Logic and Truliant knees, GXL hip liners, Vantage ankles) because many were sealed in packaging that was missing an oxygen-barrier layer. The extra oxygen exposure can make the plastic insert wear out faster than it should, which for some people has meant earlier revision surgery. If your implant was placed roughly between 2004 and 2021, it is worth asking your surgeon whether your exact model and serial number are on the recall list and whether you should be monitored, even if you feel fine right now. Not trying to alarm anyone, it is just newer information a lot of patients were never told.

Yep, Im in HHS, NYC right now. Had revision knee surgery yesterday afternoon. All discomfort, planning, pre-surcical screening, extra rehab time, etc involved. Plus, all med costs, rehab costs, time and transportation are my burden.
Doc says the 3hr procedure went well. Hope so..
A recall from a bankrupt company who knew they were shipping out a bad product just did it.
Anyway, im here for a few days and hopefully all good some day?.
NOT HAPPY ! If anyone knows any of those people involved with that Exactech company. Please tell them thanks from me and my only wish is that they got to use the inferior product and it to fails on them..
Im 80 years old.

4 Reactions@george12345 So sorry for you. I compltely concur with your view. At least you are now in very good hands at HHS.
Here is an interesting story on what happened and how outrageous it is:

What happened the first time. Did your surgeon offer different implants? Or was this just his standard implant and spacer? How did you end up with this surgeon? Is he also being sued?
@steveinarizona the surgery did not offer different brand of implant. I didn't ask. The surgeon was a well respected dr. at HSS. He has since retired early this year.
Presently im dealing with pain from the surgery and looking at therapy for next 3 months, maybe more.
No litigation on my end but I really think everyone involved should take some responsibility.
As a addition; My right knee is the right now issue. 2 years earlier I had the left knee done, same company, same device and it has been flaring up and im afraid that this too will new replacement.
Any ideas?
There have been other instances as well involving larger and more prominent players. Zimmer Bionet had recalls of its hip and knee replacements. Stryker, the biggest player, had some minor voluntary recalls. Smith & Nephew had had recalls as well.
Newer implants seem to be stronger and more reliable. Only time will tell.
I am not sure whom you expect to accept accountability. The surgeon who selected the implants is retired. HSS did authorize his practice at the hospital but it will be very difficult to demonstrate that he did not practice at an acceptable level. HSS does not bring on knowingly bad surgeons.
You are still at HSS which is considered the best orthopedic hospital in the country. An HSS surgeon did the partial on Lindsey Vonn that allowed her to return to intenrational championship level skiing (from the Palm Beach office).
What are they doing? Are they just replacing the liner or are they replacing the entire package? I assume the latter and if that is true what system did the surgeon use for the revision (Stryker Triathlon, Smith & Nephew Journey II, Zimmer personalized knee, etc.)?
@george12345
I’m so sorry you’re going through this.
Having TKR is difficult enough.
And now this. So unfair.
I’m afraid it’s all about the $$ for a lot, if not all, companies.
I know they need to make a living, but to knowingly sell a defective product- especially one that goes inside the human body –to me is immoral.
I suspect there may be charges or a lawsuit brought against them, maybe as a class action suit. Keep your eyes and ears open in case that happens.
I wish you a smooth recovery and rapid pain relief.
