I had stage 1 cecum (right side) colon cancer 10 years ago. Surgery was curative. I still have annual check ups with my surgeon and colonoscopies every 3 years. Pathology showed my tumor had 1 mm invasion of the submucosa. My surgeon said he could refer me to an oncologist if I wanted, but with 0/20 lymph nodes negative and the tumor just having one gland barely piercing the submucosa, he believed surgery was curative and he was right.
With stage 1, I think where the tumor was is important. Stage 1 rectal cancer seems to have a higher risk of recurrence. Where was your original tumor? What type of surgery did you have? Do you use Signatura (tumor dna) blood testing?
I had it in the rectosigmoid junction. It was classified as colon though. Stage 1 t2N0M0. 15 nodes all clear, no LVI. No high risk characteristics. I had robotic surgery. No, my oncologist does not do Signatera for stage 1. Just CEA, scans and colonoscopy when needed.
Had a hemicolectomy for Stage 1 cancer 9 months ago. No treatment needed except for CEA blood screening and I will have a colonoscopy and CT scan leading up to 12 months post surgery.
