Gabapentin for non nerve pain?

Posted by LPRSOB @jdbarr1, Sep 10 2:08am

My doctor wants to put me on gabapentin for flank/rib and chest pain, but Ive been told consistently my pain is musculoskeletal and not nerve related.

Has anyone had success using gabapentin for pain thats not primarily nerve related?

I think she suspects Fibromyalgia which would make sense, but it feels like there are better meds for that as well.

Whats your experience been with gabapentin and musculoskeletal pain or fibro?

My podiatrist put me on gabapentin after a second toe amputation. It did not help with one thing! He had given it to me before with a hammer toe surgery. It’s a waste of time! Totally futile!! I told him repeatedly it does not work. How disgusting of him as he is wrongfully prescribing this drug

I took gabapentin for a serious shoulder injury with nerve damage; I lasted three days before I broke out in a rash. My neurologist prescribed Amitriptyline for nerve pain that kept me from sleeping at night (off the label use) and it worked wonders! Only 10 mg at H.S. That doesn't help your muscle pain but it might help you sleep better.

@sjm46 my docs give me that same med (amitriptyline) for occipital neuralgia and it helps…it is even used for certain intestinal spasms, and it worked very well for that.

@nycmusic So glad to hear it! I had an orthopedic surgeon who told me he never heard of such a thing when I asked for a short-term prescription for Amitriptyline when I fell and broke my arm, stretching out the nerves and muscles in a fall. He actually told me "I'm a surgeon; I don't do pain management!" He reluctantly gave me a two weeks supply which got me over the hump so I could sleep at night! It really does work for some of us and I am happy to hear that I am not alone in this.

I started taking Gabapentin many years ago. It was prescribed by my pcp for the back pain I was having. Just a few years ago, I read that it was linked to Alzheimer’s & Dementia! Since then, I have cut back on my dose. In retrospect, I would not start taking it. Do your own research before you start taking any medication!

@sjm46 YES! Amitriptyline ( elavil) 10 mg at H.S. helps me as well with my nerve pain from spinal stenosis and pelvic floor pain even. I have been RX Lyrica 25 mg that is like Gabapentin for nerve pain as well in a low dose. I am afraid to take it as there have been so many negative reviews on it. any one know side effects of Lyrica that have affected them? also do not want to mess w my Amitriptyline. Nerve pain is the worst!! Difficult to live with and with back issues for about 6 years nerve pain has worsened even seeing Dr. Dr. Dr. Pray and trust God that is what gets me thru the days of pain. Thanks for any info on Lyrica Godspeed!!

I am so glad to hear that Amitriptyline works for you; it certainly did for me. When I dislocated my L shoulder and had nerve damage from the jamming of my elbow in the fall at the gym, I had so much pain at night--like a knife sticking into the muscle, aching/burning--that Tylenol didn't touch. No position in bed was comfortable. I used to sit in a rocking chair in the basement and just rock back and forth and cry until I got so tired I couldn't stay awake any longer. Thank heaven for that neurologist who did the EMG to assess the damage; she was the one who recommended it to me when I told her how awful the pain was! The orthopedic surgeon who managed my case--totally worthless. So I completely understand what you are saying! I wish you good luck and helpful solutions. Thanks for sharing; maybe we will help someone else!
