Has anyone had gluteus medius/minimus tendon repair with good outcome?

I have a high grade tear of gluteus minimus and smaller tear of gluteus medius. I am considering surgery but have seen some very discouraging posts for issues after surgery. I've tried PT, ice, modified physical exercise. Still aches while sleeping at night even when sleeping on "good" side with a pillow between my legs. I'm concerned surgery could have a worse outcome. If you have had a good outcome please describe your experience. Thanks in advance.

Oh my, do I feel your pain and aggravations. Stairs are not your friend, now or 6 months from now. I'm sure you have considered every adaptation available. Suggestions: would a weekly visit to a hair salon be helpful or Google shampooing hair adapters for using at the kitchen sink. And of course, a sponge bath is not quite the same, but if you have help this works. I'd be so fearful of falling in the shower. And the use of a bed pan might be a remedy for go issues. There are also unfriendly adapters/pull ups for night time relief so you don't have to get up to go :). If only we could sleep in a stryker frame. It's just one day at a time. Remember to laugh and let everybody around you help make living a bit easier. We ought not to pass up offers of help because helpers are rewarded intricately and our thank you with a smile is their reward too.

@ennaoj44 you can buy dry shampoo caps from Amazon. When I was in the hospital they used them on me. Felt so good.

Argh. I have a troublesome herniated disc right between my shoulderblades and it made it a week of recovery without deciding to spasm. Well, now it has. Can’t take NSAIDs with the high dose aspirin and I’m afraid of muscle relaxers so I’m trying to tough it out.

On a positive note, my surgeon moved my follow up from Friday to Wednesday, so I’ll be seeing him in less than two days.

At the age of 80 (I'm a very active 85 years old now) I had surgery for a complete tear of the minimus and a partial tear of the medius tendons. It took a year and a change of doctors to finally get a diagnosis. I had to wear a brace for 6 weeks and could not put weight on the foot of my affected leg for the same period of time. Not fun, but as a result of the surgery and a good PT I have not had any issues since. Before the surgery I had a great deal of pain in my hip and leg. I hope you have an outcome that will be as good as mine.

@sugarbaker I think I'm responding incorrectly. I've been away from the blog for years. Yikes, I can't figure out how to get around here anymore. Anyway, I 've had quite a few tendonosis and tendonopathys and partial tears around my body. Dear One's, I have quite a few diseases, some soft tissue. Just had another MRI of Shoulder, hips and waiting for results of lumbar. I am o73 year old female with Osteoporosis etc. This surgery you speak of has got my attention! May I ask, what was your situation that you needed surgery for? I have gluteal and bicep involvement as well currently. Other tendons elsewhere. I 'm waiting to talk to my Rheumatologist in October. Thank you and God bless, sunnyflower

Just a quick update from me. I had a gluteus medius tear repaired on 8/24 so I’m 2 weeks out. They also cleaned out a lot of calcification, so some additional damage was induced debriding this.

Things have been going well. I got the brace unlocked to 90 degrees on 9/2 but the swelling in the hip (and associated knee) has been too much to sit anyways. I started physical therapy last Friday, so I’m doing exercises every couple hours. Since my tear was less severe than the imaging looked, I am cleared for 25-50% weight bearing now and expect to be cleared for 100% on 9/16. I will still wear the brace and will have my movements restricted for the full 6 weeks.

So certain aspects have been accelerated for me since it was a partial thickness tear, but I’ll still be restricted for the normal duration and I’ll follow the usual physical therapy path. The surgeon feels that part of my symptoms have been driven by the calcification. Unfortunately, this was my good hip prior to the acute tear, so I may need the left hip debrided and cleaned out as well down the road.

Please be sure to keep us informed re recovery, etc. Many seniors struggle w/ same diagnosis but are hesitant of surgery--especially those who have a full thickness tear w/ fatty infiltration and atrophy because a gluteus medius/minimus tear was not properly diagnosed timely. I sure do wish you good recovery and a pain free future. Joanne

I recovered 100% from a gluteus medius that was 80% detached from the bone. Surgery was successful and PT got me back to full use. No more aching at all.

@kquilts Did your doctor detach the other 20% and reattach the entire gluteus medius or did s/he just reattach the detached 80% portion? The reason I am asking is because I'm at 50% and have a doctor who wants to detach it all before reattaching. Thanks for your response.

My understanding was he reattached what was unattached only.
