Colestipol for diarrhea: Can it make you bruise and bleed?

Posted by koneil @koneil, Feb 18 8:41am

I have had bile induced diarrhea for at least five years.
Recently, my doctor prescribed Colestipol Hydrochloride for the direarrhea. The results were amazing. It feels like I'm reborn. My diarrhea has stopped.
I have noticed that if I bump into anything I get hugh black bruises on my arms. I have very thin skin on my forearm and the slightest cut bleeds forever. I was reading that colestipol can cause bleeding.
Could this be why I bruise and bleed so much? The bleeding and bruisesing is just on my forearms.
Does anyone else have this issue on Colestipol treatment? I can't stand the idea of living with chronic diarrhea again.

I have the same anatomy. Has Colestipol worked for you at all to decrease your diarrhea, or number of bowel movements per day?

@eileenredding . Yes it has worked well for me. Timing is everything. I have other prescriptions to take and I'm on pain management. The colestipol will interfere with my pain meds, so I have to take other medications either one hour before I take the colestipol or four hours after. If I cut the time any, my pain medication will not work. Other than that the colestipol works great.

I started Welchol last month and it instantly helped me, stopping the loose stools. I started taking 2 a day, but now I'm taking only 1 a day and it's still working well. I am hoping to get off of it in the next month or so and see what happens. I had my gall bladder removed 35 years ago so I don't know why the loose stools started all of a sudden.

@koneil thanx. I cannot get the pills down-if I do-they come right back up? Swallowing is very hard and I often forget to swallow. Gross. I am 70.

Colesstid made my triglycerides go from 120 to 216 in 6 weeks and raised my VLDL . Should I be concerned and stop taking it or is it just my liver reacting to the bile restraint and I shouldn't be concerned? (My liver is currently fatty and stressed...but AST and ALT not high )

@mary7n1 - welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Sounds like a big jump in your triglycerides. What did the doctor say who ran the test revealing your current triglycerides level?

I have been on 3 Colestipol 2x per day, loose stools are much better if I don’t miss a dose, I have never had my gallbladder out, but was on previcid for about 20 years before having hiatal hernia repair with fundiplication. This probably didn’t cause the diarrhea, since I was having it off and on before the surgery. I have lost about 40 lbs, I think my weight has stabilized since being on the Colestipol. Does anyone else have sudden liquid stools while still on the Colestipol?
