Daily calcium recommendation dose

Posted by briarrose @briarrose, 3 days ago

I was in contact with my breast oncology team regarding Vitamin D3 and Calcium supplements. I was surprised to see their recommended dose of 600 mg. daily in food intake and their advice if this amount of calcium is taken in daily food intake, no calcium supplements are necessary.
I was under the impression (and doing such) that at least 1200-1600 mg. of calcium per day is recommended especially when taking the AI medications.
I am getting my calcium through foods, almond milk and a supplement. I believe I am certainly reaching that dose range.

My medical oncologist recommends 1200 mg calcium per day, together with a vitamin D3 supplement. She prefers that I get as much of both from food sources as possible. She checks my calcium and D3 levels every 3 months. I don't get a lot of calcium in my diet, so I take a 600mg supplement twice a day (you have to divide the doses into two because your body can only absorb so much at once, and I also need to take it around my other meds to avoid drug interactions). She also originally had me taking 1000 IUs/day of D3 but recently bumped me up to 2000 IUs/day. Living in northern latitudes means most of us don't get enough D3...and I'm in Michigan, lol.

Thank you.
I take gummies @ 1200 mg. at once, so I learned something from your post!
My last lab for Vitamin D was high at 60 so I was advised to stop it. Had been taking 2500 mg. daily.
Next lab due December to see if I can re-start it. My calcium levels has been normal range.
I am lactose intolerant so it's a real challenge to get in that diary (for calcium and protein) so I must work on it.
I buy almond milk with has 450 mg. of calcium per 8 oz. glass (the 25 calories one) and often have 2 glasses of that per day. But there is no protein in it. I add protein powder to my morning yogurt and really watch my intake to make sure I get enough.
Yes, all the doctors and nutritionists recommend as much calcium as possible from food but that can be a challenge to someone like me.
I have questioned via hospital portal their recommendation of 600 mg./daily, waiting to hear back.
Thanks again for your input.
And best of luck to you!

I'm glad I could be of a little help! I didn't mention that I'm currently on a dairy elimination diet at the recommendation of my GI health team, so I understand the challenge of getting enough dietary calcium. I really rely on those calcium supplements, unfortunately, but you gotta do what you gotta do...and do whatever works for YOU. My best wishes to you, too, my Pink Sister! 💗

I take a combined vitamin D3 and K2 supplement along with 600 mg calcium to help with better absorption of calcium, and directs calcium to the bones and teeth rather than calcifying in soft tissue and arteries. I do eat enough other dairy to provide the remaining required calcium.
I didn't know about K2, but my friend's husband was a supplement rep before he retired, and she suggested I research it. I just looked it up on AI to better explain it to you, so I suggest you also do so. I have a friend who took estrogen blockers, and her only issue (significant) was she lost a few teeth! Ugh!

I would just caution that anyone with heart issues or who's on heart meds (like me) has to avoid K2 supplements.
