What moisturizers are most effective during radiation? For scars?

Hello! My radiation oncologist prescribed Silvadene and it was wonderful!!

Seconding Silvadene for relief from the pain! Also, calendula and Aquafir for skin protection.

The calendula and Aquafir would stay on top of my skin protecting it for hours, so I bought some super silky blouses from Goodwill that I didn't mind getting stained so I could always have lotion..

I have Swedish/Irish skin but was able to go the full 35 rounds without blistering.

My oncologist recommended Calendula too- I had 15 rounds of radiation on left breast. But prior to I had a lumpectomy and reconstruction on both breasts. I was 60 at time of treatment. My doctor had to call in a prescription cream to heal my skin( I’m forgetting name now) after radiation. I also had radiation during summer time. The prescription cream healed up the “sunburn” look quickly. I had a very hard time going out in the heat that summer. My breasts just needed to be inside and cool.

I used spray Aquaphor or calendula cream immediately after each radiation treatment — in the dressing room. My radiation oncologist prescribed mometasone, a steroid ointment. I used the mometasone before spraying on the Aquaphor every night before bed.

The spray on Aquaphor is nice because it is cold. I didn’t have any skin issues using this technique. Silvadene is used for burns. I didn’t need it. Radiation burns are not related to ethnicity. My radiation oncologist told me that light & dark skin have an equal chance of burning regardless. I am very fair.

@ksmitty Just wanted to add that I never burned or blistered from radiation - I believe because of the Silvadene. I had 30 regular and 5 booster radiation treatments and started using the Silvadene about halfway through. I kept it in the refrigerator and it was like a little self love every time I used it! I believe it has a small amount of antibiotic in it for those who are blistering but it was a miracle for my fairish skin during this process. And again, I never burned or blistered but still used Silvadene every day! Best of luck and prayers for your healing!

I used mometasone and Lubriderm throughout my radiation treatment (Proton Ty, 15 rounds + 5 boost); and now using Aquaphor, as it sems to help the tender skin. I got redness, and tender, tender nipple on my left breast. I was Stage 2, lobular cancer, with no lymph node involvement; and had a lumpectomy in June.
I am almost 2 weeks out from radiation, and it is dissipating.
I had a question (which maybe should be on a new thread): my radiation oncologist prescribed Vit E 180 mg softgel, and pentoxifylline Er 400 mg tab, for optional cosmetic healing of scar tissue.
Has anyone taken these (in particular the pentoxifylline)? Thank you in advance for answering. Susan

@absmps, how is radiation going? Did you find a cream that works for you?

Calendula cream. It worked well for me. I applied immediately after I got home on my warm skin, thickly. And reapplied multiple times per day. Whenever my skin started to feel irritated. Even on days I didn't have radiation (the weekends). The radiologist thought my skin reacted remarkably. No burns or blisters. Who knows why particularly. One would think the cream must have helped.
I had two side effects from Keytruda which threatened my life, so I was happy radiation went so well. I was due for a break. My nipple did start shedding skin after radiation and for months. So whatever you use, don't forget to reapply on your nipple if you have one. I think I did skip mine.

I had SBRT radiation(in a study) to right pelvis and odontoid. The skin both sides of neck got red, small bumps not quite blisters and severe intching. Rad Oncologist suggested Aquaphor and Polysporin. It took over a week to notice any difference but now 5 weeks post radiation both areas are free of rash. I do have two small bald patches on either side of neck in mastoid area. No one seems concerned. I’m hoping the hair will eventually grow back.
