Anyone experience pain with Y90 treatment?

I am sorry to hear about what you are experiencing. I am fortunate enough to have a neighbor who is a retired GI doctor. He got me in with a new GI group, and within 2 weeks I had an endoscopy where they found 2 ulcers, one worse than the other. They biopsied the larger one and found remnants of a radioactive bead.

I have lost 20 pounds. I am treating the ulcers with liquid sucralfate and a prescription for Prilosec. I had the endoscopy on Jan. 28, and the medicine eased the pain within days; however, I am still building up my diet, and I still fill up after, say, a whole sweet potato.

I can't take my oral cancer meds because they irritate the ulcers. I am starting chemo next week, which scares me; I had my first chemo in 2019. Feels like I am starting over again.

There is a syndrome associated with the Y90 you have probably read about, with extended recovery. I found a few other stories on the Mayo site. I never had nausea, just extreme pain in my abdomen.

Has the interventional radiologist given you anything for nausea? Talk to them about the syndrome and maybe some painkillers as well.

@ronnielynnhill, welcome! It's been a few days since your husband's treatment. How is he doing 2 weeks out? When did the course of steroids end? How are YOU doing?

I’m very happy to find this chat. My uncle had the Y 90 on March 26th. He’s had right sided abdominal pain at varying levels ever since. I believe it’s mostly a burning sensation. He’s been back to the hospital (suffered for three weeks first) and had a work up (labs and CT) that showed nothing. Sent home on a regimen of Tylenol and Pepsid. Tiny bit of relief but mostly not. Here we are 7 1/2 weeks post Y90 and he’s still suffering. He is also getting treatments of Zirabev (bevacizumab-bvzr) and Tecentriq (atezolizumab). I know he’s at risk of ulcers from the Y90 as well as immune-mediated hepatitis from his immunotherapy. I see in one of the comments that someone had to have an endoscopy in order to determine if ulcers were the culprit. And also there were remnants of a radioactive bleed in one ulcer! So I guess what I’m asking is, should my uncle insist on an endoscopy? He has 2 oncologists pkus his interventional radiologist and none have suggested it. Why wouldn’t they? I’m confused…

Hi, I am curious how long it lasted? I am five weeks out of my treatment and still experiencing pain that starts in the later part of the day into the night.

Hello, my husband had Y90 for a liver NET about two weeks ago. Ongoing fatigue which is expected and persistent pain that varies from dull to intense almost like burning but in the area of the liver. He hasn’t had a temp in a few days but today he came home fr/ work feeling tired, achy almost flu like and has a low grade temp of 100… is this “normal” and to be expected? I know we were told that these symptoms would last about 2 weeks and we are right at that threshold… just wondering when he’ll start to feel better..

@aste, I'm sorry to hear that you experience daily onset of pain late in the day. Have you told your cancer team about this?

@calinina, it's been a couple of weeks. How is your husband doing?

@colleenyoung depends on the day but cautiously optimistic to say a bit better? The fatigue def still lingers but usually doesn’t hit until mid-late day. His pain lingers but not as intense, so slowly but (hopefully) surely symptoms are subsiding… he’s supposed to get Lanreotide injections but we’ve been pushing it off since side effects are exhaustion/nausea etc… he’s been losing weight, not alot but he has a lean frame to begin with and his Dr wants him gaining or at least maintaining his weight prior to surgery. His next set of scans are end of August/early September.

My husband just had y90 last week. He has been experiencing vomiting/nausea. Is this normal? The doctors indicated it is possible to have this as side effects and hoping it will subside in the next day or two. Has anyone else experienced this following y90?
