"L" shot butt, my A1C 5.7 to 6.3

I don't know the exact answer but the NET specialist sent this message to me just today.

"Indigestion” of any sort, occurring within the first week of Sandostatin or Lanreotide is very common (20-30%) and related to pancreas enzyme insufficiency (SS receptors on both exocrine and endocrine pancreas). A1c will go up by ~0.5% also."

I like to use artificial intelligence to translate what my doctors say so that it makes more sense to me. My question pertained more to indigestion but my doctor included the bit about HbA1c elevations.

Artificial Intelligence explains it this way:

"The Mechanism: The endocrine pancreas contains beta cells (which secrete insulin) and alpha cells (which secrete glucagon), both of which feature somatostatin receptors.

The Effect: Sandostatin and Lanreotide inhibit the secretion of both insulin and glucagon. However, their inhibitory effect on insulin is typically stronger than their effect on glucagon.

The Outcome: Because insulin secretion is suppressed, blood glucose levels rise, commonly resulting in a mild increase in HbA1c of about 0.5%."

I’ve been taking octreotide injections for 6 years and it causes real blood sugar spikes when I eat. My endocrinologist told me I have an unusual blood sugar pattern with the high spikes that come down faster than normal but the spikes are still damaging. He said he had another patient on octreotide with a similar pattern and the minute he stopped octreotide his blood sugar went right back to normal.

The pros outweigh the cons for me with octreotide. Best of luck.

Yes lanreotide is known to increase blood sugars. Many have to go on metformin to control it. Everolimus also increases it.

It will be interesting when my HbA1c is checked again. I have only had 3 injections of Lanreotide so far.

I'm not diabetic "yet" but I have a high insulin level. I was told that a high insulin level is a precursor to Type 2 diabetes but eventually my pancreas won't produce enough insulin. Now my (hyperinsulinemia) might be caused by a pNET. If my high insulin level is from insulin resistance, lowering it could cause my blood sugar to increase.

I wonder what happens if Lanrotide decreases my insulin level too much???

I haven't had my A1c checked since Lanreotide was started. I think my A1c will be re-checked this upcoming week and I will let you know what happens.
