Upper leg pain and waking up every 1.5 hrs for last 7 weeks w/spasms
I’m on 7 straight weeks of the weirdest symptoms. I’ve been to my primary Dr, sports med Dr, Sleep Dr and Neuro-muscular neurologist. None have seen this before which is weird. Sleep Dr ruled out RLS. This issue is only when I sleep so it’s not induced by body position. Once I fall asleep, I wake up every 1.5-2.0 hours every night and always on that schedule. I haven’t had one night making it 3 straight hours. When I wake up, my upper legs feel tight deep inside the legs and when I straighten them they spasm and the inner cramp releases and I can go right back to sleep. This pattern continues night after night. I’ve tried everything, epsom salt baths, quinine, thc, CBD, prescription muscle relaxers, warm baths, stretching, foam roller, heat pad, ice, Gabapentin, every sleeping position possible…you name it and I’ve tried it. Has anyone heard of this before and have any suggestions that I can ask the neurologist about on? I’ve also had sporadic muscle twitching since last March, 2022 but don’t have any muscle weakness. Thank you for any help. My legs are pretty sore throughout the day and if I sit at my office desk for 1/2 hour, when I stand up the hamstrings are so tight and hurt. Neuro thinking most likely a neurological issue but ordered blood tests and a thoracic spine MRI. They feel the brain, lumbar and cevical spine MRI’s do not point to being the cause to this issue. Thank you for any help.

My sympathies. I had Total Hip in January and July. Since the first one, I sleep in intervals of 15min. I go to bed, take at least 60 min to fall asleep then wake up after 15min of sleep. All night long. Have you tried Trazadone at night? I take 200mg when I get in bed and maybe 3 times a week I sleep for 1.5-2 hours. That is huge for me! It’s not a solution but maybe it would help?
@cobweb Add to that B-6, gabapentin, and a little bit of melatonin.
Your note is a few years ago, but reading it today and you and I appear to have same issues. Where you able to resolve pain as well a body jerks? The jerks are annoying, most are not noticeable to others, but my wife feels them when holding my hand and wonders why I am not weary from this constant jerking action. CT Scans, rubs, neurology and pcp consults and yet no diagnosis. Looking forward to your response. Thank you.
I know it sounds crazy but have you tried pickle juice? My husband used it for years for night time leg cramps. I’ve been using it at night when my operation side leg is in pain. It really helps! You can buy the individual servings on Amazon. Try it’
Has your neurologist thought about this Possibly being some form of dystonia. And that would be secondary to a Parkinson’s diagnosis. I would certainly ask Your neurologist, if he’s considered this. I went to an orthopedic group who didn’t even consider Parkinson’s when I presented with hamstring pain in the inability to sit for long periods of time without significant pain. I had both anxiety and depression for several years when my PCP put me on Abilify as an add-on to my sertraline. Within two weeks, I had serious hamstring pain; it’s been four years now, and the Parkinson’s diagnosis was made two years ago. Unfortunately, the carbidopa levodopa extended release medication that I take has not helped. By the way, I stopped the Abilify within two weeks when I developed the Hamstring discomfort. It seemed to be there was a pretty clear connection but stopping it did not resolve the hamstring discomfort.
Dystonia Does not respond to narcotics. Other pain medication’s will not touch it. Anyhow, it’s something to consider.
