Inflatable Penile Prosthesis (IPP) implant: What to expect after?

I am at 4 months post implant and I while you will find some variables between doctors, it will probably go something like this:

Following the procedure, you will wake up with have a catheter, partial erection, and everything bandaged up so that your penis is pointing straight up and secured to your abdomen. Mine was held up by bandages and a jockstrap that gave me and I was left at 50% erect. You will either stay in hospital till the catheter is removed or go home and come back the next day for removal. I was out of the hospital within a few hours of the procedure and went back for removal. Bandages stay on for a couple days.

They will instruct you to keep penis pointed up as much as possible for the next few weeks even while you sleep. You will point it down to pee and then secure it up with underwear or jockstrap. I had to do this for 4 weeks until my first followup appointment. You can sleep on your back or side, but keep things pointed up and secured.

At four weeks I was cleared to begin inflation, 5 minutes a day, then later twice a day. At 7 or 8 weeks I was cleared for "use" via a teleconference call. Regardless of use, daily inflation needs to occur over the next 6 months to stretch things out just like a natural penis. I am now at the 30 minutes inflation per day twice a day inflation cycle. This will go on until 6 months and then pretty much you are on your own.

Following implant you may seem a bit shorter than you expected. With regular inflation and stretching the tissues will expand and you will gain additional length (1/2" to 3/4") over the next 6 months. I am seeing this now so all good in that department.

I will be honest, the first week was a bit rough. I never needed pain meds, but I was uncomfortable much of the time with all the penile securing , soreness, and such. The second week was better.

Lastly, these things take some getting used to as they do not retract like a natural penis. The inflation adds mostly girth and rigidity with a bit of length. You are always a show'r now and I found I needed to go to one size over jockey style underwear to allow some room. Also to help with some sensitivity in the first few weeks, baby socks work great over the glands to keep it protected. There are other forums that could be useful, "Franktalk" for example has quite an IPP discussion forum. In the end, they work as advertised and no one would know you have one.

@beachflyer I am unfamiliar with jockstraps is that what is used to keep penis pointing up? Is there a problem with it wanting to point to one side or other? Has your angle changed after implant? With Trimix I am at @ 4 o’clock standing, will that change. If I try to place peninsula to belly now it is really uncomfortable, did you have this. Once cleared for inflation I assume it causes pain and it gets better with time but how long before it does? Is it painful for you now in any way? Thank you for your response

Jock-straps are also known as "athletic supporters' and are used to keep a mans genitals tight against the body usually for sporting events. Tight jockey style underwear will do the same thing. Your doctor will likely encourage you to keep it up against your body the first few weeks. I was uncomfortable with that while sleeping and after a week or two started sleeping on my side and letting it lay sideways. By day I would then pull it up vertical using the athletic supporter or tight underwear to hold it in place. Nothing bad happened that I am aware of as a result of my occasional lack of securing it while sleeping.
Inflating is a little bit uncomfortable at first, but goes away over the course of time. Hard for me to say where things will be pointing for you afterward as I am not experienced with the AMS700. I received a Coloplast Titan XL implant that uses a single layer of very thick material for rigidity. When flaccid my Coloplast is at 4 or 5 o'clock to start with, it is never truly flaccid hanging down like a natural penis. Once inflated it is straight out...3 o'clock.
As far as cycling, you can control any discomfort by how much you pump it up. I never experienced "pain" when cycling, rather some occasional discomfort and would stop simply not add anymore pumps. At this point I can pump it up with no discomfort at all.

Well tomorrow 8/17/26 is my day ams700 cx. Pretty nervous but also looking forward to happy days. I will try periodically posting on how progress goes for me. In hopes it can give others some idea of what to expect, knowing that everyone is different and this is just one prospective.

@jasonfarmer, how is it going so far?

Day 12 after surgery and doing ok still take pain medication but getting much better. I left outpatient surgery with catheter to be removed by me at home 24 hours afterwards. Penis was wrapped up all the way to the end , nothing visible except catheter tube. When catheter was removed my myself with wife’s help wore regular underwear with pad and jockstrap over underwear. This was most comfortable for me. My doctor does not point penis up just let it hang where it wants also he does not inflate penis even though I thought he did as I asked at 8 day checkup because I am larger diameter and constant longer flasid state than before surgery. He called it woody edema. I am also very firm in this flasid state . All of this is a pleasant surprise to me. At 6 weeks I go by to doctors for activation training.
Power lift chair is of great help to me. Only able to sleep on back and I am a side sleeper. Can only sit in regular chair very short time, recliner leaning back is most comfortable. After my prostate surgery, advance xp sling surgery and now ipp surgery I am a slower less pain tolerant than most others it appears.
I thought this ipp surgery was going to be much worse than the sling surgery but not the case at all for me close to same discomfort. Happy I got this implant but October 1st sure seems like a long time from now( activation day).
I once again had the bad allergic skin reaction to the surgery prep, this is painful on its own, but it is getting better.
If this seems a negative report I am sorry it is much better or easier recovery that I expected.

I tried to find another man I know in my area that got a implant and could not, only one that was scheduled for surgery then he canceled, he is wanting to know how mine goes I will share information with him. It is a little weird to tell close family member, mother brother sister about this surgery. I did though as we are close family and live next door to each other. To me it is no different than a woman having to get a breast implant after having breast cancer.
