Reclast infusion long term side effects

@travelon I just started Recast August 16. No problem so far. As for the anemia, I began to notice my hemoglobin drop about three to four years ago when I was donating blood. It is common as we age to need to supplement with leafy greens and, sometimes, Ferrous Sulfate. With a breast cancer diagnosis in November 2023, I began Anastrozole in April 2024. As a result of Anastrozole, my bone density dropped like a rock, hence, the Reclast. Currently, the hemoglobin is at 15.8 which necessitates forgoing the Ferrous Sulfate and waiting for the next blood test to monitor it. It's a delicate balancing act when managing health issues as we age. Stay informed and active.

@margaret3363, sometimes (not with dannyanddebbie, though), a short 5 day course of steroid can alleviated the cytokine reaction that might be causing your pain. It has to be the Reclast.
Initially Reclast can cause a reaction that produces cytokines then the cytokines cause production of more cytokines creating a cycle of inflammation.
Did you have trouble with the hip or thigh before the infusion, and had you been on other bisphosphonates before Reclast.

@gently thank you for your reply. No, I had had no trouble with my hip or thigh before ReClast. Reclast is definitely the cause. I had been given ReClast in past years with no negative reaction but not this time. I couldn’t walk, I was hospitalized while they looked for a cause but found nothing. It’s settled in my femoral bone and I still have pain. How long do you think this “poison” can stay in the body?

Margaret, my main concern is that Reclast carries a risk of atypical femur fracture, especially after years of use. These fracture can cause the type of pain you are experiencing for some long time before breakage.
While the bisphosphonates stay on the bone for many years, they are basically inert during attachment and cause pain only when encountering the cells that break down bone.
One pathologist said that he didn't think the bisphosphonate ever left the bone until it either encounters the osteoclast cell or until the bone around it breaks away in dissolution by osteoclasts. He said that bisphosphonate clads the bone in a mottled way clearly distinguishable from unclad bone.
The inert bisphosphonate shouldn't be causing pain. But if the bones were weakest in those areas zoledronate would accumulate there and you may be experiencing intense interaction between the drug and the osteoclasts. The length of time you have been on this medication puts you at greater risk for the atypical fracture. You should be able to get orders for the MRIs easily. X ray isn't sufficient.

@gently I looked up how long after my infusion before I received the 5 day steroid packet; it was over a year after the infusion, did nothing for me. Am I right that once one receives the Reclast infusion it is pretty much there to stay? I honestly do not understand why the FDA has not attached a Strong requirement that any patient who is thinking of receiving this infusion has to read a lengthy informational pamphlet that provides all the potential side effects once this poison is injected into one’s body. 28 months after my infusion I continue to have the symptoms. Not as severe in some places but leaves that area feeling weak with restricted mobility. The feeling of nausea, vision blurriness, pain with movement and exhaustion makes for a rough day that is constantly adding to one’s fatigue!

@dannyandebbie So sorry for your reaction and pain. It is such a gamble to treat one thing and end up with more issues. I feel foolish to decline recast without trying it, but after my severe reaction to bisophomates and having anemia, I just don't want to risk it. I would rather risk doing another course of Forteo.

@claunch I also regret it. My fatigue went away in about eight weeks, but my back pain has still not gone away. I also have eye infections and right after I had that my hands and my wrist swelled up so bad I couldn’t even get a ring on the very first part of my finger.. I told my doctor I would never do that again. It was horrible.

@penny57 So sorry for the ongoing medical problems you have experienced. The last few days I have begun to feel closer to “normal” but still easily fatigued. Being unsteady has diminished so I am able to leave the house. At one point, I tried to go to the grocery store and had to clutch the shopping cart to stand upright. Thankfully, my husband was with me and helped with the shopping, and I also was unable to drive during this time. My anxiety was heightened by my concern that something else was developing, some type of neuromuscular problem. Anyway, I am gradually better and hope you are also. If my endocrinologist had said downtime of eight weeks or more, I certainly would not have taken the ReClast infusion. I expected several days of flu like symptoms.

Well if you read extensively about recast side effects it stays in your bones and body tissues etc for 10 years and can give severe bone pain anywhere in your body, hard to pinpoint that its recast doing it because most Dr and endocrinologist will deny that its a side effect of recast because they need to justify giving it to all us poor souls who got this 40 year diagnosis with low bone and no good treatments or reversals,etc because if they made a drug or treatment that cured us: they couldn't keep us dependent on the bulkshit horrible drugs the manufacturers had to make with disemregayd to how bad and how long term the side effects to ALL OF THESE OSTEO DRUGS ARE HORRIBLE BUT ALL THEY CARE ABOUT IS THEOR INCOME STREAM NOT GETTING SHUT OFF. I choose alendronate pill but now I've been on zepbound cuz I'm fat with low bone and its given me laryngeopharyngeeal reflux no cure either and can damage my esophagus from zepbound and fosamax shit to. Look up all the side effects from recast every different web site will give u more listed. GOOD RX HAS SOME AND INDEPENDENT OF TE DRIG MANUFACTURER WEB SITES : THE LATTER WILL GIVE U JUST THE TIP OF ICEBERG TO THE EFFECTS OF RECLAST IN THE BEGINNING AFTER INFUSION AND YEARS AND YEARS TO COME.. ENDOCRINOLOGISTS AND DRS WHO PRESCRIBE THESE HORRIBLE POISONS DO NOT TELL U THE WHOLE TRUTH. Im sorry u going thru this. DONT TELL U THE TRUTH. I hope u don't have any more bad things to it.
