Transitioning from Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine) to Methotrexate
Transitioning from Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine) to Methotrexate
Posted by nettsie @nettsie, 2 days ago
My doctor has recommended switching from hydroxychloroquine to Methotrexate. As explained I would continue taking hydroxychloroquine for about a month while starting with a low dose of Methotrexate.
I would appreciate hearing about anyone's experience with this.
Thank you.

Methotrexate (MTX) can negatively affect bones, leading to osteoporosis, bone pain, and fractures, especially at the high doses used for cancer, but even lower doses for arthritis can sometimes cause issues (called MTX osteopathy). I took methotrexate for my rheumatoid arthritis when I was young and now I have severe osteoporosis.

4 Reactions@maymore Same with my 84 year-old husband, who has severe kyphosis and now has his 6th spinal compression fracture. Doctor has only blamed it on Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Thank you for asking.
Thank you for sharing. I too was taking Hyroxy but for LUPUS which I ended up testing negative. I'm still pursuing a Diagnosis. Blessings.

What do you take now?
I don't take anything for the rheumatoid arthritis because it is gone since I went on an anti-inflammatory, plant-based diet, but for the osteoporosis I take Raloxifene.

1 Reaction@maymore Why does he want to take you off a drug that does not cause bone loss to a drug that does?
@dvargo. Raloxifen does not cause bone loss. It’s supposed to build bones.
My doctor is treating me for CTD dermato amyositis. I also have back, shoulder and hip pain and Osteoarthritic DDD. My toter for CTD is high for TIF1 gamma antibodies. No cancer yet found
I have been on Plaquenil for 4 months with little pain relief but it helps control the skin rash. I also have constant diarrhea only controlled by Imodium Dr. Has said I can switch to methotrexate any time. Just let him know. Will it help the pain especially in my lower back and hips? And since I have IBS will it cause this diarrhea to het worse?
Thanks for your input
