Post Radiation Therapy - Blood in Urine

Following removal of my prostate, I had 40 sessions of radiation therapy to the pelvic area. The radiation therapy was concluded in 2018. This past week I have noticed 3 instances of blood in my urine. I was concerned enough to contact my urologist, and he reassured me that he believes it is a result of radiation from 2018 and nothing serious.
I did some research and found a site that may describe my condition. It is called radiation cystitis, and the site stated that 1% to 2% of men who receive radiation to the pelvic region will experience bleeding 5 to 20 years later, due to injury to the bladder during radiation.
My question to any of you fellows out there who may be in that 1-2% with me: "How long did the blood in the urine continue; did it stop on its own at some point? And did you require any medical treatment to get it to stop? I would appreciate any responses.

@susanesmith I was treated by Dr. Billy Cordon at Mount Sinai Medical Center, Miami, Florida. He used Amicar first but it lasted only one month. I urged him to use ALUM and that has solved the problem since 2023.

Some of The chemical agents cited that have been successful depending on the patient are:
- ALUM
- Formalin
- Silver Nitrate
- Amicar
- Sodium hyaluronate (Hyaluronic acid)
- chondroitin sulphate
- Sodium pentosan polysulphate (Elmiron) orally
- Prostaglandin
- Conjugated Estrogen
- Dexamethasone + epoetin alpha
- High-dose methylprednisolone
- Phenazopyridine

Susan, your boyfriend's doctor is wrong. If a previous patient of his had a cancer spread, there could have been multiple causes. I had serious internal bleeding, and needed 40 sessions in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber to stop the bleeding. I urge your boyfriend to get the oxygen treatment. It will help him.

In 2018 I had a radical prostatectomy, followed by hormone therapy. Plus 32 treatments of Proton radiation. In April of 2026 i started having problems voiding my bladder.now I'm passing a lot of blood and blood clots.

Time to call the urologist. Sounds like you need a cystoscopy to see what’s going on. I had one about five months ago and it was one of the easiest procedures I’ve had and it sounds difficult.
