Diagnosed 2022 with osteoporosis, now saying osteopenia

Posted by lilliegrace @lilliegrace, Mar 31, 2025

I'm very confused at this point! I'm October 2022, the DEXA showed I had osteoporosis. My doctor wanted to start me on Prolia (?). I declined at that time and soon had additional health issues that were more pressing. Forward to 2025 and DEXA is showing I have osteopenia.

Are these normal results??

Honestly, it's just nice to know that someone else can understand why this doesn't make sense to me. Thank you 😊

That was really helpful to hear about the Echolight scan. I did not believe this technology was available in Australia. On investigation there are a few places in both Melbourne and Brisbane and one in Sydney using it!! This may be really useful in helping make a decision about if and when to take osteoporosis medications. This is up for discussion with my doctor, after another DEXA scan, in the middle of the year ...

I am in Australia too. As it is a new technology it is not yet available on PBS.
I think when l asked it was over 200 dollars but l think l would pay that, not yet available in South Australia.

Good to hear from another Australian and thanks for the information on cost!
I live in the ACT and EchoLight is not available here either. However, I would be prepared to travel to Melbourne or Sydney and pay the cost in order to get as much information as possible before starting on meds ...

Hi there from Australia
I was diagnosed with osteoporosis at least 20 years ago, started on tablets (every Sunday) then when Prolia was introduced that is the drug I have been told to use. My bone health is quite poor - I weigh only 43/44 kilos (am a tiny 78 year old women who has reasonably good health) but concerned that i've been having these injections for way too long (since they were first introduced). I am a "student" (not for qualifications this time around) of alternative health and also neuroscience, as well as being a Buddhist and a follower of Carl Jung and his cohorts. I do not wish to use Prolia or similar drug in future, but when I've mentioned this to my doctor, he sent me to a specialist who insisted I keep taking Prolia. The specialist (endo) did a good job of scaring me into submission, suggestion that I'd be in greater trouble if I didn't continue.

Are you able to advise me of the consequences of discontinuing use of Prolia (or similar drug) and perhaps any strategies I might employ to minimise any such consequences. Thanks heaps from Australia.
