Psychosis or paranoia in adult son, not sure what to do

Posted by lolly906 @lolly906, May 30, 2019

My son has shown symptoms of pychosis since last Fri. He is 40 we took him in to help him 3 months ago, I never saw this coming, he recently got a good job, don't think its gonna last he refuses to go to any Dr. And we had him placed in protective custody Sunday evening but a mental health assessment said he was ok but he's not I've called Nami and everyone I can think of I have no idea how to help him and how long this will last he is paranoid of phones, Wi-Fi, everything taken things apart. His dad is going to make him leave does anyone have any suggestions or knowledge on this condition? I don't know what more to do I'm physically and emotionally exhausted and all mental health agencies just say call 911 which we have done and they can't do anything without his consent the mental health system is broken I have seen it now firsthand

@lolly906 You are definitely not alone. I'm in the same situation. He is up most of the night checking cameras he set up outside our home because he says "estranged to him" family and friends are stalking him and harassing him. He will not take his psych meds 85%of the time because he says he doesn't need them and they make him feel sick. He is agitated 80%of the time and can't go anywhere with him without him saying we are being followed or laughing out of nowhere saying Thomas like "they think I don't see them" and same. He plays the doctors, and law enforcement. They can't do anything if he doesn't commit a crime or if he doesn't want the help. I have had to pay thousands in damages to others, lost a home, a vehicle, must of my family and other children. My husband doesn't understand either and I don't blame them. I myself have thought of walking away but I just can't do it.

My heart breaks for you. Have you reached out yet to your local NAMI chapter? If you don't have one, there are chapters whereby you can call into Family Support by Zoom. Yes our healthcare system is broken and unless he 1. commits a crime 2. self-harms 3. harms others or 4. in full psychosis there isn't much you can do. If you have had to pay thousands of dollars in damages, I wonder if that is considered harm to others. I recommend reading Dr. Amidor's book "I'm Not Sick I Don't Need Help". The book focuses on the lack of insight that many who suffer from these illnesses have. If he is in psychosis, perhaps you can reach out to his physician or county mental health services to learn the procedure to move forward with "white papers". Since he is playing the doctors and law enforcement, document everything on 1 page with bullet points so if he ends up in an ER you can present the documentation to ER staff. All the best to you.

I’m so sorry. I’m 20 and my mom who always had depression developed psychosis last year. She thought people were watching her, in her phone and computer, messing with her health by poisoning and stuff. She would be combative and scream at me, believing my dad and I were in on “it”. It took nearly a year before the entire family convinced her she needed help. We had to keep telling her thinking wasn’t right and didn’t make sense and that we weren’t gaslighting her. It all culminated when we got her to reluctantly go to a hospital for inpatient treatment. She only stayed 3 days (if you go voluntarily, you can leave at any time with 72 notice). There she was treated by a psychiatrist and put on needed meds. It was like a miracle. Within days she realized people weren’t following her and stuff. She still has some anger issues as she’s still pissed at us for making her go as she doesn’t think she needed it. It takes time, but have hope - eventually they’ll succumb to loved ones and friends and get help, even if it’s skeptical. Definitely reach out to his doctor and consult NAMI. Even if you can get him to talk to an outpatient psychiatrist every week that would help. Good luck to you!

He covered it up when they evaluated him, they told me he had no signs of paranoia, but as soon as he came home he told me he believed everything he said happened, 20 people following him, GPS in his phone( which he destroyed)) GPS in his lighter, he's been taking wires of our computer and he completely closed his bank account for his checks to be direct deposit saying he had been hacked, he has no power of attorney there's nothing,. I'm learning a very hard lesson, this is the most frightening thing I've ever seen and I feel helpless his dad does not understand and now wants him out I've lost work, we are not 20 anymore and even if I were this would be difficult, I will keep posting, but I don't know what's going to happen unless he wants help, I just hope it doesn't end badly I'm worried I wish mental health would of assessed him more thoroughly I don't believe they did thank you for caring, I feel very alone right now
