What does that look and feel like? I cannot be the “only” person experiencing this devastation and NO ONE believes me after 4+ years!

Hi Sue,

Sorry to hear that there are difficulties getting to the bottom of this.

I don't know if you are menopausal and I don't know other medical issues that may be confounding this and I am not a physician.

With that said are you on hormone replacement including testosterone?

I don't know if this might be helpful for you.

No your not the only one.Since I was medically disabled with neuropathy and the inability to walk created what you are exsperiencing.Its called muscle atrophy and you can get it simply by not useing any particular muscle group.I too have tried to get drs to except what I have but their always looking to prove elsewhere.Yes theee is weakness and some discomfort with it soyou try and get them muscles going again.Heat and massage therapy is your best friend

How about some weight lifting and gym work? Since I stopped my 35-year record of gym workouts I’ve found muscle loss.

Well, I suffered a broken femur above the knee in May’26. No surgery but weeks on non-weight bearing movement. I’ve been a lifetime active person but the weeks in bed started this downward direction and more muscle pain. I also have Central Sensitization.

I had an ependymoma (malignant) removed from inside left of my spinal cord c6/c7 close to 28 years ago. If you could see the left side of my body, you would see quite a difference compare to the right side. My left hand and left leg has atrophied over time ... they are much smaller. Every time, I have a hospital stay & I don't stay active, my ability to walk up stairs or get out of a chair or walk short distances is a harder to do. At this point, I've strained a lot of muscles in my lower back ... use 50 Tramadol in the morning to take of the edge of the pain. I still do a lot of physical therapy, I ride a recumbent stationary bike in my garage, and bought electric trike to ride along the ocean. you have to keep working on the strength of your body & try to keep the atrophy at the same level. It's kind of a no win situation but you don't really have any options. I stay away from going down the rabbit hole of thinking negatively. We are only on earth for a short amount of time so we focus on things we can control. I would say that I've tried most of the pain medications & have experienced side effects of being cognitively impaired & addictive (Oxycontin) or extreme constipation. I finally decided 50 mg Tramadol was good once a day (maybe twice a day at most to stay away from constipation).

Sorry for the long note -- muscle atrophy is a big problem.

@sue15

Sorry to hear about your femur. Do you have osteoporosis?

REPLY

For central sensitization which I also have, hard to exercise the muscles, but you must find a way that is the least painful with physical therapy assistance, graded exposure because you have to learn to desensitize the areas which I find quite hard. It’s so easy to overdo it, but besides the femur issue that you had the central sensitization is not a dangerous situation but it’s so uncomfortable that it’s hard to manage a lot of breath work and meditation, and trying to find someone who might understand desensitization techniques

I agree with everything you said.
