@pat9892, there are a few things to unpack in your message.
1. Bioidentical hormones: hormones marketed as "bioidentical" and "natural" aren't safer than hormones used in traditional hormone therapy. And there's no proof that they work any better. See this helpful information from Mayo Clinic experts:
- Bioidentical hormones: Are they safer? https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/menopause/expert-answers/bioidentical-hormones/faq-20058460
2. Find an osteoporosis medication that is right for you.
There are different types of osteoporosis medications, with different mechanisms of action. If bisphosphonates don't work for you, there are other options. This information might help you to talk about the options with your doctor.
- Osteoporosis treatment: Medications can help https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/osteoporosis/in-depth/osteoporosis-treatment/art-20046869
3. Osteoporosis and cancer medication
You mention that you had osteoporosis before diagnosed with breast cancer. You have estogen positive, invasive ductal carcinoma, right?
When taking cancer treatments that reduce estrogen, it can increase the risk of bone loss.
Were you on Zometa (zoledronic acid injection)? Have you discussed other medication options with your oncologist and endocrinologist?
@colleenyoung Thank you for your helpful information and the links. Regarding bioidentical hormones and osteoporosis treatment. This was my first dive into the bio. hormones and it truly makes sense that they would be in conflict while taking an aromatase inhibitor. The only bisphosphonate I took was Risedronate. Reclast was suggested, but not knowing if I'd have an unwanted reaction I didn't want an injectable in my system for three months. My endocrinologist agreed with my decision to stop the Risedronate. She did say she had patients who'd taken AlgaeCal with good results. I do need to run that by the medical oncologist, at the suggestion of the dietician since in addition to a generally healthy diet, I also take some supplements. My upcoming oncology appointment will include labs (I've been keeping a diary of my food intake) so he can give me some good input before I see the endocrinologist a couple of weeks later. My 2 year DEXA isn't until mid November but I am exploring options prior to those appointments and I am willing to eliminate some of my present supplements as needed, if the AlgaeCal seems to be a good fit for bone strengthening. I do exercise which includes light weights in addition to walking 2-3 times per week.
