My husband is stage 1, cancer he wait 5 months for second opinion.
My husband was just diagnosed with prostate cancer grade 2, 3+4=7, stage T1c. PSA 5.7. He wants a second opinion, but he can’t get in until January. Is that too long to wait?

Don't wait to get second opinion. Get it within 2-3 months. No one can tell how aggressive it is without another set of eyes on you and another biopsy. In July 2016 I was diagnosed with slow growing cancer. PSA 2.3, gleason two 6s, one 7. I had one biopsy, with recommendation to wait for a year to make a decision on treatment. I elected removal. Urologist waited 4 months to remove it. Upon removal, prostate was fully involved with Gleason score of 12 tens - terminal with 1.5 years to live.
I got a good oncologist who recognized the gravity of my situation and saved me. I've had a long and difficult journey with treatments and medications. Another biopsy one month after the first would have saved me 10 years of medical turmoil. Don't wait!

2 Reactions@jeffmarc thank you for your reply. I had Gleason 7 and Gleason 8 had radical prosectomy and bio chemical recurrence PSA doubling time was 6 months. A year later the spinal fusion leaves me with pain and difficulty with every day activities. I know the Dr's were absolutely incompetent and have gotten other opinions but not sure that act my age I want to have radiation and weaken myself, I think that quality of life over quantity of life is important to me my lack of trust with the medical field has me deeply concerned. I still have time as my next appointment to schedule radiation is mid September, so I'm trying to make my decision. Thank you.

Your case is a perfect example for someone who should contact that doctor that I recommended. You have questions about your future treatment and he can really help with making a decision and giving you a great doctor to handle it. You said you’d go to Massachusetts for treatment so this is a place in that state.
You are a Gleason eight the seven isn’t really considered, The higher number is what counts. You’ve had surgery you’ve had a reoccurrence that calls for a good GU oncologist to help manage your case. Please try to contact this person.

I would not wait that long. I was diagnosed at the end of June and treatment won't start until 9/1. I would not want to add another 5 months. Maybe look into a televisit and/or another doctor. They only need the test results. I'm fortunate my sister works in a practice back east and I got second opinions within 48 hours. Be prepared you may end up with the split decision. Both doctors agreed on the need for and type of radiation therapy. They disagreed on ADT - Lupron vs Orgovyx.
Also, as you are doing research treatment options. This forum is excellent. TBH I got more complete and better information here than from my radiation oncologist and urologist. Good luck.
@jeffmarc Thank you for your kind words I and information. I do have upcoming appointment in Maine with New England Cancer Specialist, they are affiliated with Dana Farber and have been quite honest and helpful but I am fearful of treatment because of the bad experience with M.G.H. trying to find my way thru this and appreciate the time you have taken to help. Thank you. I'm trying to get as much information as possible to help with my treatment decisions.
