Is ADT causing anemia

Posted by waynerl @waynerl, 3 days ago

I have been on ADT therapy using Abiraterone and Prednisone for one year, my PSA is 0.1, but my red blood cell count is in the low range. I don't know how accurate PSA readings are concerning my cancer. The prostate cancer I had 15 years that was successfully treated with radiation came back a year ago and metastasized to my right lung. My oncologist says I have to stay on my ADT meds until I die from something else. But I am so tired all the time and struggle to breathe, due to anemia. ~Wayne L.

It is very important to know that both vitamin B12 deficiency and folate deficiency are more common in older people, affecting around 1 in 10 people aged 75 or over and 1 in 20 people aged 65 to 74.

B12 deficiency can effect body in may ways and can cause major physical, neurological, and psychological health issues because the body needs this vitamin to make red blood cells, build DNA, and protect nerve fibers.

Aging effects correct absorption of B12 - it is diminished even if there is adequate amount of it in our diet. So, if elderly is deficient just taking supplements orally might not resolve the problem and administration by injection is needed and gives much faster results.

And yes, vegan diet should not be implemented without thorough understanding of it, which applies to any kind of a diet (Atkins, Paleo, intermittent fasting , etc etc. )

You are very welcome and if you can find tablets that are slowly dissolved under your tongue it would be even better. That way B12 is partially reabsorbed into body directly through the mucous membranes under the tongue and the rest that you swallow is absorbed in your digestive system.

TRT is Testosterone Replacement Therapy that is usually given to raise your testosterone level if it has not recovered within a year and your PSA is still very low or undetectable. Raising your testosterone can reduce or eliminate side effects caused by low testosterone. It worked for me in just one week.

@gently Thank you for your recommendations. I will forward your comments to my oncologist at the VA in Seattle. ~Wayne LeLoo 425.583.4177

Your accidental inclusion of the number can be removed by clicking the three dots and reporting to the site monitors that you'd like it removed.
You might ask for somatic testing of the lung biopsy by Foundation 1 https://www.foundationmedicine.com/solution/foundationone-cdx
You'd just ask the oncologist to order it.

You might want a dexa scan to see how your bones are holding up.

@pesquallie Oh, right, I forgot that acronym. My oncologists believe that testosterone can cause metastatic cancer to spread, so that's why they have killed it. I have increased my B-12 vitamin to every day, and also added a slow release Iron tablet to help with low RBC, and have just emailed my cancer team about getting a Rx for EPO which was recommended by another on our forum. Thank you for your comment. ~Wayne L

@gently Hi Terry, after reviewing my message log I realize that I accidentally (?) added my phone number myself. 😁

Rodger, well you already know that you aren't supposed to answer the phone if you don't recognize the caller's number. And that if you answer the phone accidentally(?), never say "yes" even if they ask if your name is Wayne.

In that case I ask, “who’s calling” ,ignoring what they said about a name. If it sounds like a legitimate call, then names are available.
