Priming Tymlos pen?

Posted by jopat @jopat, 5 days ago

Hi, I've read through lots of posts about starting Tymlos at a lower dose and that's what I'm going to try. One question I can't find the answer to: the directions say to prime the for the full dose. Is that ok to do if I plan to start with 4 clicks? Or should I also prime with only 4 clicks? Thanks in advance for any advice!!

I always prime with every new cartridge on its initial use with the full (80mcg) dose. I have also noticed small drops on the end of the needle, post injection, when removing it from the skin. Is this normal?

@john78109 Yes, it's normal to have a little left over. When I did the injections, I counted to ten after inserting the needle.

@cathyf31 my Tymlos pen only works from the priming mode. It never switched to a number. I called the Tymlos Clinical educator, but my registration has gone through yet. I did that last night. I had to leave a callback number, so now I am waiting to hear from the specialty pharmacist.
They will probably want me to come see them.
The whole thing is a hassle.

@alidamc I don't understand this statement. There's no such thing as "priming mode." Priming the pen just means turning the dial to 80 and pressing the button to release one dose -- without injecting the needle into the skin. Are you not clicking the pen to 80 every single day? It goes back to zero every time you use it. YOU have to set it to 80 every day; it's not automatic.

The Thymlos Educator called me and said I was giving myself injections the correct way by moving the pen into the priming mode from zero. The specialty pharmacist had told me the same thing. I Inject when it turns back to 80. That was the priming mode for my pen. So, I have been doing everything correctly. The pen never goes past zero. So, good, I have been doing it correctly since I got the pen. I did read the warnings. But the study only used mice for two years as they were growing up. The study was so flawed, I am really not worried about getting cancer or any of the other side effects. Time will tell, I guess.

Glad you got it sorted out. I was pretty sure they would get back to you fast.

Let us know how it goes and what you find out. I had a similar issue but my husband gives me my injections…not that it matters but he has a medical background and knew right away that the pen wasn’t right.

@osteopatient2026 The Clinical Educator at Tymlos said I was doing it correctly. I put the pen back to 80 and inject it into my stomach or thigh.

@njx58 I am doing it correctly. I thought priming mode WAS setting it to 80.

Did she say the thigh or flank was okay? Even though it’s a subcutaneous injection there is some discussions in medical circles that only the lower abdomen because of the time needed to be absorbed. My doctor told me my flank was okay but after checking with another doctor they said no publicly released info from Tymlos/Radius said any other location. Wondered if that had changed with the nurse from Tymlos ?

@osteopatient2026 If I hadn’t found this forum, I wouldn’t have known to register or even have someone at Tymlos to talk to. I appreciate everyone here who answered and asked questions to help me understand more about my Tymlos pen. My prescribing Dr should have informed me to register. Personally, I am not fond of her. She’s only an APRN. Not even a Physician. But that’s the way things are today because we don’t have enough physicians. After she prescribed the Tymlos, that’s when I went to see the Orthopedic Bone Specialist who just reviewed what the ARPN did,

Yes…it’s pretty bad…even though my husband went to medical school started his internship then left and ended up doing other things. His sister is a doctor…at least she says “I don’t know…I’ll see if I can find out”

I also time the needle withdrawal for 10 sec. Thanks for clarifying this matter.

@osteopatient2026 I don’t know. I will try to find out. A few time I did it on my upper leg thigh. My APRN really didn’t give me any instructions. She just said to google and I would find the injection instruction video. I am so skinny, I don’t have much fat to inject. I only weigh 106 lbs so finding a place to inject is difficult for me.
