Post Surgery Incontinence

Posted by jjk36w494 @jjk36w494, 2 days ago

I am a 69 year old man in generally good health. I had davinci robotic prostate removal surgery 5 days ago. I am still on the catheter until 8-14-26. I wear Depends with an additional pad for catheter leakage. I am self conscious of the urine odor.
1. Any suggestions to help reduce or eliminate the odor?
Also:
2. Did post surgery kegel exercise or therapy help regain continence?
Thank you.

Hi,
I had my Prostate removed back in 2014 and today wear a light pad for the occasional drip now and then. I do approx. 120 Kegal squeezes every morning plus other pelvic floor exercises. I think the squeezes and floor exercises do help, got to keep up with them. I don’t remember leaking past my catheter while it was in. I slowly got better over time, it took me about a year to reach a point of no improvement. To keep the odor down I use a daily cream deodorant like Lume on my ball sack, seems to help.

I am 21 months post surgery and am 79. My incontinence has not gotten better but I live on Depends and some pads I get from my insurance. I wear 1 depends at night and 1 during the day. The pad is for when I am going out and want extra protection. I did 40 sessions of Kegel exercises and that helped but I have both urge and stress incontinence. The voiding ranges between 30 and 200 ML in a 12 hour period. Three months ago I had the SNS implant but that has proven to be no help even after having good success during the test run. I’ve asked my doctor to schedule me for an AUS. 21 months of always being wet and living near a bathroom is taking a toll. Best wishes.

@archtxt4u I have written long and hard, maybe even on this thread, about incontinence clamps. I suggest you try a few for fit and comfort even if it will be just temporary while you ponder going forward with an AUS. I did just that 4 years ago and the clamp has worked so well for me I have abandoned any thoughts of more surgery.
ps: Weisner clamp on Amazon is recommended.

@johnnyz - my own opinion is that a bit bigger size is better for comfort, but worse for allowing leaks to escape out to your pants. Ones that fit more snugly hold everything in place better.

Keep in mind, if you’re like most folks, you’ll have a pad in there as well, so you need to allow a little room for that. I’m 5’9”, 175 lbs, and I wore Depends size L pull-ups with a heavy Kroger pad/guard, and that worked well for me. By the time I was ready to move to medium-weight pads/guards, I no longer needed the pull-ups - my leaking was such that I could wear the pads/guards in my boxer briefs with confidence.

I currently wear size L boxer briefs with a Depends shield in the mornings and a medium-weight Tena pad/guard for the rest of the day. I did buy some size M boxer briefs, and I do wear them, but they’re really, really tight. They’re fine in groin, very snug, but the waistband is a killer, as well as the leg openings.

@turtbean Thank you. This is helpful to know. In a few weeks I plan to be in SC and can pick up some Kroger pads. I live in Fort Erie, Canada. For the size M boxer briefs, have you found a certain brand that you like best?

@johnnyz - for everyday boxer briefs, I generally buy Stafford brand “Dry+Cool” brand. I get them from JCPenney, but I think you can order them from Amazon as well.

I usually don’t like blended materials, but these work well for me.
