I will be having the Tulsa Procedure for my prostate cancer in 10 days

Posted by mikead63 @mikead63, Aug 6 10:15pm

I have chosen the Tulsa Procedure for my prostate cancer and it will take place within 2 weeks at Mayo/Rochester. My wife and I evaluated the options based upon my age, biopsy, numbers etc. I prefer not to get into the specifics other than I will be 80 in December; have evaluated all options; and, believe that it is the best choice for me after 10 years of active surveillance.
I would appreciate any advice from those of you who have gone through the Tulsa procedure. Any and everything would be greatly appreciated. Thank you one and all who I follow, I laugh with, cry with and pray for. Mine is but a small stumbling block in life compared to so many of you.

Good Luck, Mike! TulsaPro is a great alternative to surgery and radiation.
And at age 80 you want the least invasive procedure for ANY ailment, let alone this one! Best,
Phil

I too opted for Tulsa Pro at Mayo Jacksonville. Precedure was 12/15/25 and I’ve been through two PSA tests. My PSA dropped from 4.5 to 0.5. They ablated the front half of my prostate so I do have about half a prostate left. The rear half is where all the important stuff is so they didn’t have to touch that area and thus I have had no urinary if ED issues. My cancer was localized in one area of the prostate. In my 13 core biopsy I only had one core with 70% abnormal, and less then 5% 4 for a Gleason score of 3+4=7 or favorable intermediate. I did have issues urinating prior to the precedure because the tumor was located on the inner half of the prostate near my ureathra causing the issue. After Tulsa I can urinate much better with a much stronger stream. The procedure was easy. The hard parts were the initial MRI and sitting in that tube for an hour. After the procedure the catheter was hell for 7 days but I made it and removing it was soo good. For about 24 hours I had an urge to urinate and had to get to the bathroom quickly. I also sprayed everywhere and really couldn’t control that. After 24-48 hours that was all gone and hasn’t came back. I had my first errection about 7 days after the precedure and sex a week later. I’m really happy of my decision to do Tulsa Pro and that my cancer details lead me to this procedure. I seamed to be textbook for it. I wish you the best in your journey and pray it goes well. I will keep up with my follow ups and pray the good results last the rest of my life. If not, I’ll decide what to do then.

@ucfron Just getting ready to drive down to Mayo/Rochester from the Twin Cities for my labs and pre-op. Quick question Re: MRI - I have wide shoulders and I will be having a complete shoulder replacement later in the year. If my shoulder is squeezed in I'm concerned I won't last too long because of the pain. Glad you brought this up so that I can discuss during my pre-op today!

Hi mikead63. My husband will be 79 this month and he had Tulsa Pro in April this year. And like you, we concluded that Tulsa Pro was the best choice for us.

Wishing the very best for you. Cheers.

@kjholz I believe if you bring this up with your MRI team they can give you some relaxation medicine that can make it easier to withstand. I may ask for that for my upcoming December MRI and one year checkup.

I'm 77, had TULSA PRO 7/1 and it was a great choice. Catheter was the only challenge. Congratulations.

@ucfron

You could likely control the effects of spraying by sitting like your wife does. May not be the manliest thing, but sure is easier for the ones who have to clean up.

@bajjerfan I tried that but when Indid (back then) I couldn’t go at all. I kind of had to stand directly over the toilet and let him hang down in order to go. That fixed after about 24 hours

I did Tulsa pro @Mayo Rochester just over two years ago. I was 4+3 with a PSA of 8.6. Just completed my two year extensive follow up in July. All 8 of my PSA tests have been right around 0.8, all 4 of my MRIs showed no evidence of disease, and they did a biopsy and took 14 cores, none of which had cancer. You are in good hands in Rochester. The procedure was painless for me, and I even walked my normal 2 miles the next morning. If you click on my name, you can look at my profile and see all my posts. I have had zero side effects and could not be happier with my choice.
