Statin discontinued due to neuropathy. What are some alternatives?

I have been using Lipitor since 2007 for lowering my cholesterol which is on the list of those medicines that are suspected to cause neuropathy. I am thinking of discontinuing this menace but before doing so want to check with those members who have discontinued using statin and what is their experience. What alternative methods have they since adopted for lowering their cholesterol .. diet, alternative medication, exercise or anything else ?

@johnbishop I have only recently I’m aware that there is a serious issue of 50% of people that start taking statins develop neuropathy within a year of starting them. I was never advised at this before it was prescribed for me which I am very upset about. I haven’t had a chance to get in to my doctor yet, but I have started having symptoms of neuropathy, which I know are being caused by this statin. The symptoms started shortly after I started taking it, when I had no neuropathy symptoms whatsoever before I started the medication.

Hello @rdavis1018, Welcome to Connect. I think it's best to discuss it with your doctor before stopping taking the statin. I did have a long discussion with my doctor several times about the neuropathy side effects of statins and told her I would rather work on my cholesterol numbers through lifestyle changes since I already had neuropathy and didn't want to make it any worse. I'm not sure which statin you are on but you might find this related discussion helpful:

@johnbishop yes I’m aware that there are serious issues with suddenly stopping statins so I’m not going to do that. I plan on contacting them on Monday to make an appointment to see if she could possibly switch me to something. That’s not a statin or if we should just gradually take me off of it and I can try dietary and changes an exercise as an alternative

Hello,
Just letting everyone know there are non-statins now available by prescription only. You need to ask your primary physician about that. However, just keep in mind like with all medications, it may or may not work for you.

It might be worth googling “CholestOff reviews”, an over the counter supplement by Nature Made. My husband used it after experiencing dementia-like symptoms from statins and CIDP from Repatha. He no longer needs anything and his numbers are acceptable.

Can anyone recommend a source or research connecting taking statins with development of neuropathy? I am surprised and disappointed not
to be advised by a physician treating me for PN with
PT that I should also address statins which I have been prescribed for many years.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can offer a direction to look into.

Cardiogize from youngliving . My bf had a triple bypass and they wanted to put him on those and we did research on statins and Cardiogize was the best choice for him. It works wonders

I have read that if you eat RED apples, carrots, and beets ALL of the time, your cholesterol will go down naturally, by many points. I do this, but have not been to the doc yet to get cholesterol levels. I do have high cholesterol, but not too high, and the ratio of the good to bad is good. Lori Renee

After my heart attack on February 8, 2010 I was introduced to a local Cardiologist who started me on Plavix, Metoprolol Tartrate, Isosorbide and Crestor. After being diagnosed with PN I discontinued the Crestor on Oct. 15. 2018 and the Plavix on April 20, 2019 at the suggestion of another doctor because I also take 81 mg aspirin. Never during the 8 years of' 'treatment' was I told any Cholesterol level numbers, just that it was high and that I also had diabetes when on my last office visit to this Cardiologist HER own test results showed my Glucose at 101 and I blame my own naive 'respect' for the medical profession for not wanting to second guess this woman until it was too late! I am stuck with this condition and after consulting 27 legal offices was repeatedly told that all the court cases, judgements and class action suites against statins and Astrazeneca (the maker of Crestor) were closed. After extensive research there is no doubt in my mind that this is the only cause for my contracting PN.

@dutchman09 sue her and the office...these drs push statins knowing what they do and its unacceptable....lawyers won't touch cases if they themselves cant make a buck......small claims....keep fighting

@davidpn statins only make ppl more sick. They don't want us better, they want us more sick. All about money...
