My surgeon used a Tourniquet during my TNR, Man it huts worse the knee
My surgeon used a Tourniquet during surgery and 17 days Post opp knee feels great my thigh is still hurting and bruised, should I spot ice this area or use heat? I’ve been rubbing it to try and get the blood to flow and heal it? Anyone have this? Thanks

1 ReactionI don't know if a tourniquet was used for my TNR but I had lots of nerve sensations of pain, itching and burning in my right calf. It is now 10 months out; the strange feelings had stopped but I have an area of numbness in my right calf. During the first 5 or so months I also had pain under my knee replacement that would subside when I moved the leg around. I talked to my doctor about these sensations and he said he knew of no reason why I was feeling those things.

1 ReactionI am sorry you are dealing with this. The great majority of hip/knee surgeons still use a tourniquet. Research seems to be ambivalent about the benefits and risks of it.
My surgeon did not use a tourniquet using tranexamic acid to control blood loss. I had no post surgery pain.
The good news is that tourniquet pain usually does go away in a matter of weeks.

I have had a TKR and 2 revisions. Fortunately the last surgery has been very beneficial.
My surgeon uses a tourniquet and tranexamic acid to control blood loss.
The area of the tourniquet pain is uncomfortable but has resolved each time and can take 4-8 weeks. It will pass.

2 ReactionsMy surgeon never mentioned that they would be using a tourniquet on my leg to control blood loss during the operation. I couldn't understand why my thigh hurt so bad. Then I found out about the tourniquet they use during surgery to control blood loss. In my case it took two months for the pain to go away. It wasn't pleasant and I used extra strength Tylenol which helped a little.
In addition to the tourniquet your surgeon probably did not tell you he was using a small sawzall to cut the bone or a hammer to pound the implant into place.
Some things are probably best not discussed or conceptualized prior to TKR.
My TKR parts were recalled after 8 years. Spacer breaking down and I have some bone detereration.. Dr. reccomend Revision . Any alternatives available rather then Revision?
@dbduffer he told me about the tourniquet and also about the recovery, my inquiry was about if anyone had any good remedies.. All good..
