In this program, Dr. Wein, , MD, PHD of Massachusetts General Hospital and Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School will be discussing new treatments under investigation, such as SK-124, as well as existing medications used to treat osteoporosis. These technologies were made possible due to the FDA’s approval of Bone Mass Density being the endpoint goal for new medications based on the SABRE recommendations. Previously, approval was based on incidence of fracture, which prolonged drug releases and delayed/prevented greater research into new medications. This is an exciting change for osteoporosis research. @jozer I know! Sometimes I regret having had a DEXA since I was so carefree before, but other times I'm grateful I found out I had osteoporosis through a Dexa scan instead of a life-changing fracture. I just wish doctors would give patients a brochure or something explaining what their DEXA score means and what things a patient could do to help themselves. I feel as if we just get thrown a prescription and shoved out the door.

OsteoBoston is honored to host Dr. Mary Bouxsein, a renowned osteoporosis expert and the lead researcher of the groundbreaking SABRE Study. In this talk, Dr. Bouxsein clarifies how the study has revolutionized bone medication development by changing its core definition. Instead of undergoing lengthy trials to prove they prevent fractures, new medications can now be approved based on improved bone mineral density (BMD). By establishing BMD as the FDA’s first surrogate endpoint for osteoporosis, this historic shift has dramatically accelerated drug development, unlocked new funding, and already triggered a wave of new lab openings and FDA submissions.
