How has taking Fosamax or its generic equivalent affected you?

njhornung, I missed this answer. Now I have to look at all of your comments, so as not miss anything else.

This is very true. On July 15, 2026 I was going for my daily walk, as I reach the bottom step, I felt and heard it break. I've been on Fosamax for 9 year's at this point. I landed in my local ER then was transferred to Mayo. During the exam process, they saw on x-ray that my other femur was showing signs of fracturing. So the next day was surgery one, and 4 days later came surgery two. Both femurs have rods in them now. Here's the weird part for me, I didn't have any pain that would have caused me to be concerned that I could have a fracture. None of my doctor's even warned me that this could happen but here I am!

I took fosamax for two years and lost bone each year on my dexa. I've had several fractures that healed. I'm now on forteo. But Dr. Erik Imel at IU an HLX specialist( a bone disease) did a study and there are patients who do loose bone on bisphosphonates. I just happened to be one.

@gently I took Boniva for 2 years and bones worsened. Drugs make bones thicker but weaken the quality of the bone. That is why it causes you to fracture. I am naturally building bone now and no longer have osteoporosis.

@dvargo how are you doing this naturally. I have had no luck with these medications

Hi. You said you were naturally building bone. May I ask how you do that. I was just told my dexa scan showed bone loss and they want to put me on prolia. I'm very concerned about doing that. I just started taking osteo shield supplement but like I said..just started. I would prefer to not be put on drugs but try a more natural way. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thx

@dvargo, this is true of the antiresorptives, but isn't true of Forteo or Tymlos. These two not only remove older bone and replace it with new bone, but they both rebuild the collagenous structures that calcium collects in.
I'm glad that you've found a successful way around the medications.

@kltbf HRT, Osteostrong, lymphatic plate vibration, heavy weight training with a trainer, vit. D3 with K2, magnesium, zinc, heavy protein. 7-8 hours of sleep. Hormone replacement and heavy lifting is the key.

@cbauer77 So sorry this has happened to you. Unless there were very unusual circumstances doctors should not be prescribing Fosamax for 9 years. It has been known for a long time now that taking Fosamax for extended periods say beyond 3-5 years can cause exactly what happened to you. In other words this should not have happened to you.
BTW, the atypical femoral fracture(s) which you had often do not cause any pain and then they just break.
I suggest new doctors that know what they are doing with bones!
