TENS unit for TMJ pain?
Not sure if I asked this question before, but in case I didn't: Does anybody use a TENS unit for TMJ pain? Somewhere, in my hunting down of articles on TMJ pain, I found an inexpensive TENS unit (under $30) that a doctor particularly liked. It wasn't particularly for TMJ pain, but I don't know if there are any that are. I figure one could set it to the lowest level and work on up, if necessary. Would love to hear about your experiences. Thanks.

Hazel I replied to you about using a tens unit because I use one all the time at home. I did say I'm not sure how you would place the pads for TMJ, but you could experiment with what works for you. The pads that go to the units are little sticky 2 inch squares. Read the manual that comes with it. Mine gave me the placement instructions and settings for different diseases and what placement and settings to use. It gave me quite a bit of guidance as to how to use it and what settings to use. You just turn on the settings that are the lowest and see what happens. It's not going to just jump on and electrocute you. You can start with a very mild setting to start with. All it does is give you a tingly feeling and if you set combination setting it will tingle for a little while then it will pulse back-and-forth for a little while and stops after 20 minutes or whatever you set it for. If you don't like it you can turn right off. Hope that helps,

Jennifer, I am such a total space cadet that I forgot you'd sent me an answer about TENS units! Duh! Thanks so much. I'm still dithering about whether to buy one. I see my primary care on August 8 about the next step in treating my TMJ pain is. She's into all sorts of alternative forms of medicine, as well as traditional medicine, so I think this'd be something she'd like.
No problem Hazel, I hope you and you doc can find some answers for you.

I have a TENS unit and it certainly relaxes the muscles. They don't cost much.
I'm really going to have to purchase one. I have been pain free for three days (!!!), and I have absolutely no idea what, if anything, I've done differently. I am enjoying the current freedom from TMJ pain immensely.
