The week before my colonoscopy
Hey there, fellow travelers! I hope all are as well as we can be in this group. Quick question. I am a chronic pain sufferer, and I'm having my 1st colonoscopy. I tried a couple of months ago, and I had to cancel the morning of the procedure because I became so ill (hyperemetic) from the prep that I vomited and had bowel clearing going on for 4 days afterwards. After a week off meds I was miserable as I couldn't keep them down, then for almost another week. I like my gastro and she's given me Zofran to take and new prep but do you all always go off all meds for the week before? Tylenol and the Gaba help but nothing works like the anti inflammatories and they want me off b/c bleeding of course... Thoughts? She knows I have chronic pain...

So sorry for your bad reaction to colonoscopy prep…My doc has me take zofran before I begin prep…there are many types of prep to choose from—there’s even a pill-camera form of colonoscopy. Wishing you better ways to get tested.
I know, right? If I get sick again this time, I'm doing the thing where you smear poop on the card or something LOL I mean, it's like 88% accurate or something. I think that should be close enough and better than nothing.
I was not instructed to stop any meds.
I thought there was only 2 prep methods. I did the gallon one because that's what my insurance covered.
The other one was only a quart and costs maybe $30.
Next time I'm paying the extra. The gallon method was explosive diarrhea. So, so messy.
I hope you find a prep method that works for you.
The procedure itself was easy because you're asleep.
P.s. if you're in a high risk category, obese or high blood pressure, make sure you have yours done inside a hospital. It can be a clinic inside the hospital, but it has to be that close.
I was on a jury where the patient died, and it was all preventable if the clinic had followed the rules.

1 ReactionThere are also pills, which work best for me. I gag so much drinking the preps I can hardly get them down. The prep with the pills worked just as well. They cost me around $20 and were well worth it.
I've had 8 colonoscopies and have always done the prep with three chilled bottles
of magnesium citrate. This prep was started at Mass General and is the best for me.
You might ask your doctor if you can do this prep. It's very easy and effective.
@krisingle1 People can only substitute this test for a colonoscopy if you have never had a polyp removed. The DNA from a removed polyp remains in your system forever, giving a potentially false positive from the poop smear test because once you’ve had a polyp, the smear test will always be positive.
I've had a few colonoscopies and it seems like the prep was different each time. The last time the cleaning was not very good and I had to finish over about 2 hours at the hospital.
@tc88 Out of curiosity, what did they die from? Anesthesia. Perforation? Bleed?
@sandrac Do you know what the "effective rate of the pills is?" What is the prep for them? How is it different?
