Has anyone been diagnosed with an Ileus?

Posted by marygail1132 @marygail1132, Aug 25, 2025

I was recently diagnosed with an Ileus. I have never experienced this before and was wondering if anyone else has this and how they handle it. I do not see a support group under this name.

hi Mary, https://connect.mayoclinic.org/search/ Ileus refers to the (usually temporary) loss of peristalsis. Treatment depends upon cause. If it is from medication, you might need to change dose or type. "Chewing gum has been studied and seems to be a cheap, well-tolerated way to potentially help with ileus as it stimulates the cephalocaudal reflex, which promotes peristalsis and inhibits inflammation."

Mary,
Never having heard of and knowing nothing about Ileus, I looked it up. I hope whichever treatment you have all goes well for you.
Please let us know. I’m a clutz with words, difficult for me to say things but I’ve found people actually care here. That’s new, unexpected tome. Thank you for sharing. It’s so much better, for me, than holding it all inside….

Mary, the ‘Like, Helpful, Hugged’ reactiions, I just don’t get.
It seems I gave myself a hug when I meant to give you one.
I’ll figure it out one of these days…

I had this after my spinal surgery. My stomach even was going to sleep plus other organs. They worked on me and I had no pain meds for my major back surgery due to that happening to my body. Extremely hard to get through all that . I had to have a colonostomy to make sure all empty 😕 Something I'll never forget!!

@tjanet - hello, and I'm sorry to hear about the constant abdominal pain and nausea. That is a difficult way to live.

You mentioned you were diagnosed with ileus. So that you could chat with others talking about a similar subject, I moved your post here:

- Has anyone been diagnosed with an Ileus? https://connect.mayoclinic.org/discussion/has-anyone-been-diagnosed-with-an-ileus/

If you'd like to check out this Mayo Clinic page on Intestinal obstruction https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/intestinal-obstruction/symptoms-causes/syc-20351460, you will note near the bottom of the page there is a subhead called Pseudo-obstruction. This should provide some information that will be useful for you.

Have you heard back from the doctor who sent you for the imaging tests about your new diagnosis of ileus and what the treatment plan will be like for you? If so, what did he or she say?

I have been having constant abdominal pain and constant nausea for a couple months. Doctors have done tests. Doctors now say it's ileus. My GI prescribed Xifaxan,he thinks it's caused by SIBO. Eating food doesn't change how I feel. Having bowel movements doesn't change how I feel. I have some swelling upper abdomen/lower chest area. No bloating, No gas,No indigestion.
Is taking Xifaxan the right way to treat ileus? I have short bowel syndrome. I only have 2ft of my small intestines left and I have all of my large intestines. Had a small bowel obstruction surgery in 2019.
I eat regular food (low fiber diet). I do LR IV fluids 5 times a week.
