I am also a 74 year old runner. Diagnosed with occasional SVT a couple of years ago.

Prescribed Metoprolol 50mg (25 in morning. 25 at night). After a few weeks-feeling fuzzy and off balance-dose was reduced to 25mg (12.5 night 12.5 morning). It was ok, no pain or anything, but really slowed my running down. Dosage reduced now to 12.5mg at night. Seems to be ok, but never managed to get my speed back.

@frane Your diminished running speed makes sense. I was advised that Metoprolol and other beta blockers are designed to lower the heart rate. That means when exercising aerobically, your heart will not be able to deliver the additional oxygenated blood your body needs to perform. As a result of this, I was unable to continue in an exercise class which was designed to get our heart rates up. I was winded and had muscular fatigue when trying. I dropped out and now do stretching and the occasional weights.
