Nose cartilage pain, no redness or swelling

Posted by John02445 @john02445, Jul 23, 2017

Hello. About five days ago, in the middle of the afternoon, I suddenly had pain on the lower right side of my nose. if I didn't touch this area, the pain was about a 2 out of 10, but when I would press the outside of my nose at all the pain would increase to around a 6 out of 10. I had no redness or swelling, no nasal drip, and no pain across the bridge of my nose. This pain decreased the next morning and was gone by the end of that night, without any medication.

Today, I woke up with sinus drip, though that is now gone by the evening as I type this. However, beginning a few hours ago, I now have similar pain to what I had five days go. The difference now is that it's only located on the lower left side of my nose. Again, there is no redness, no swelling and no pain around the bridge of my nose. The other difference is that today is more painful than five days ago (5 out of 10 when not touched, around an 8 when touched).

I am in good health otherwise and am not on any medications. I keep trying to search to see what I may have, but everyone I find who describes this type of pain also mentions having swelling and/or redness, which I do not have. My only change in behavior is recently I have started to use a shampoo with tea tree oil in it, which shouldn't trigger this type of response (so far as I can find).

My PCP is on vacation this week and the other doctor in his office is not someone I have had positive experiences with, to put it mildly. Any insights or recaps of similar incidents are appreciated.

Thanks!!

I've just started experiencing the EXACT same symptoms as the original poster for about 24 hrs now & its driving me mad!!!! The only difference being that I am fighting a very bad cold (fever, sore throat, sneezing, coughing). I have a weak immune system due to some medications that I take so I have had many colds in the past yet have NEVER experienced such a tenderness on the lower right side of my nose. The pain wasn't as bad in the beginning but has become exponentially worse. It feels as if its extremely swollen, but when I look in the mirror there is no redness or swelling or any signs of irritation...

I have had the same thing, but mind is a bit higher on the bone. It started two days ago. Feels like I got hit in the nose with something. Absolutely no visible signs of anything. Hurts the most on the right side of the bridge of my nose. Kills if I touch it and radiates up into my eye and temple. I also am thinking some type of sinus infection. Ibuprofen seems to help. If It doesn't let up soon, I guess I will call my PCP.

Hello @dawnsimola, @omerperrz and @tpatpatmore. Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! It's been over a week since two of you posted. Has there been any relief from the pain? Did either of you consult with a physician as to what was going on?

It’s so hard finding anyone who has experience this so maybe somebody can help me- I started having nose pain about 6 weeks ago. I had it off and on. I had no cold or congestion. I breathe just fine. I thought it was referred pain from a tooth extraction. Ever since I had tooth 12 removed a few months ago when I swallow it feels weird in the area where the oral surgeon drilled bone. It doesn’t hurt but it feels tight and close to nose. Anyway for whatever reason I associate the pain from that extraction even though the pain started almost 2 months after the extraction. The nose pain started getting worse.
I made appt with ent and finally saw ent- so by this time I let this go a little bit. He put scope up nose and said he did not see an issue. He did not treat me. Said maybe nerve pain.
2 weeks later I see another ent- same thing. Scope up nose and I don’t see an issue. So I went to a regular dr and got meds... the nose is acting weird- weird sensations. I got a sinus scan today. Will get results Monday. I am freaking out. I have forehead pressure as well. I can breathe fine. I am stressing out! I just started an antibiotic last night. From a regular dr. Anyway I’d scan comes back normal I don’t know what to do. I was thinking of going to Mayo Clinic to help solve this it is stressful!

Hi I have not experienced the pain that you describe however I have a few questions ;
Which teeth were extracted top or bottom teeth? I just had an implant placed on my front tooth and they said that there could possibly be pain in my sinuses after the surgery. It is wise to consult a doctor since it might be an infection. As well you are fortunate to be able to go to the Mayo clinic , they may get to the root of your problem. No pun intended.

@thelas1207, would it be possible for you to consult with the dental practice where you had the extraction?

Hello @shoefing! Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. How long have you had symptoms? Have you talked with your primary doctor or made an appointment in ENT?

I, myself, have had some lower nose pain right on the edge of my nose on my left side. If touched it, it hurts. If I stretch my face it hurts. My pain goes away once I am on acyclovir for 5 days. Usually by the second day it begins to feels better. I have had shingles twice in my eye so I wonder if there is any correlation between the two. No redness no swelling. Tried looking online for facial nerves in that area but nothing. I am at a loss. Wonder if it is stress and that is where it decides to plant itself.
