Rectal Cancer Surgery: Anyone have LAR (low anterior resection)?

Posted by moonchaser389 @moonchaser389, Feb 1 5:20pm

I have rectal cancer Stage 2-3 and I will be meeting with the Oncology Surgeon this coming week.
Have any of you had LAR (low anterior resection) surgery?
Please let me know the temporary and permanent side effects. This surgery appears to be complex.
Thanks for sharing!

Hello @williamjohn52 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. You mentioned in your post that the tumor had shrunk. That is good news. Did it shrink due to chemotherapy or radiation?

How are you feeling?

Hi Teresa. It shrunk from the radiation. Apparently the Folfox5 was ineffective.

Glad to hear you are doing so well. Is your bag disposable or the kind you clean out yourself?

I went to an ostomy nurse prior. They went through a training kit with me and samples from hollister.
The one I started with, I like. It's soft skin color on the back and clear front. I like clear because I feel more confident, kind of like watching a fuel gauge🤣
I empty it daily as needed and replace the bag every third day.
I haven't seen a need to explore others as this is working well.
I did purchase a cover that fits over the bag if I feel a need to cover, like maybe a activity where your shirt rides up. It's black and i rarely use it but nice to have the option.
I have hollister part #s for what I use and can share if you ever want to see what they are.
