TURP: Did your bladder eventually wake up completely?

Posted by donjoyiii @donjoyiii, 15 hours ago

Hi everyone, my name is Don, I'm a 64-year-old veteran living in South Carolina, and I'm recovering from a rough medical marathon. Back on June 9, I hit acute-on-chronic urinary retention where the ER had to drain a massive 4 quarts (3,800 cc) from my bladder. A scope on June 23 showed a 44-cc inward-growing prostate (lateral lobe obstruction) crushing my urethra, and the office void trial failed after my bladder ballooned past 750 cc. I finally got a successful TURP on July 1, but my hospital stay was an ordeal—the continuous bladder irrigation bag overflowed and backed up into me, and later, stagnant clots formed because irrigation was missed, forcing a painful 30-minute manual syringe pumping rescue.I was discharged yesterday with a catheter because my bladder is still too swollen and exhausted to wake up (retaining 590 cc). This morning, opioid constipation forced me to use a Fleet enema, which caused some pink bleeding, but thanks to aggressive water flushing, my urine is beautifully golden-clear again tonight. My bladder is on complete rest with a leg bag until my next trial on July 15. I'm feeling pretty unsettled about keeping this catheter in for so long and would love to hear from any guys who survived an overstretched bladder or hospital irrigation trauma. Did your bladder eventually wake up completely?"

Hello Don…tough days for sure with your bladder. I personally did not suffer with an overstretched bladder, but a friend of mine did.
He visited many urologists but no one was willing to operate on him. He was self catheterizing and totally hated it! Finally, he found a young doc who thought she could help him.
She surgically reduced the size of his bladder and almost overnight he began having the urge to urinate again. He’s been fine for the past 20 years.
Hopefully, you will not need any further intervention, but if you do and the docs tell you ‘nothing can be done’ don’t believe it for a second. Best,
Phil

Hi Don,
After an IRE Nanoknife ablation procedure and several days of Foley catheter my doctor removed the catheter. I passed the void test in the office and was sent home. A few hours later I could not pee which rather quickly became an emergency situation. After a harrowing one hour trip through Philadelphia traffic back to his office they triaged me with a temporary intermittent catheter and instructed me on how to do this on myself. I had to self catheterize for over a week before prostate swelling reduced enough for me to urinate normally. Anyhow, I can empathize a little of what you are going through. I imagine and hope things will improve going forward. Hang in there and get off the opiates ASAP.
