Girdlestone Procedure

Posted by conroy @conroy, Jan 22, 2024

Has anyone else had the Girdlestone procedure performed? I had teeth removed since Sepsis supposedly originated in my mouth. I then had my right hip removed. Consequently my right leg is 2.5" shorter. I use a wheelchair and walker. I am interested in other peoples experiences.

Hi Lauri....I think I found you on FB and I'll send you a friend request! My name is Cindy Showerman Marsh and I'm in Michigan. We can then private message back and forth as we learn more about our disability or whatever you want to call it and offer encouragement. Have a great weekend! Cindy

Hi,
I had the Girdlestone procedure performed in June 2019 after a year's struggle with MRSA in my broken femur that would not heal. I have an 8 cm. LLD that I use a lift on my shoe, but I still need a walker to get around the house, and use a scooter outside. I still get pain in the leg, especially if I walk more than usually.

I had Girdlestone surgery done and it started with breaking my left femur. They tried to fix it but failed as I have very brittle and spongy bones. Holes and such. I had 5 or 6 surgeries, mostly to clean out infections. They took out all the hardware and was on IV antibiotics for about 10 weeks. Just sitting up now it has been tasking. Have walker, wheelchair, and crutches so hope to walk soon. Anyone know place to get shoes for balance as my left leg is now 2.5" shorter also.

Talk to PT - there are orthotists and shoemakers who will take your shoes and add a lift for the shorter leg by building up the sole.

Hi Tialbin
Sorry for everything you're going thru. Hang in there.
As far as shoe lifts go, I found a place in CO. They're very good n very reasonable.

Hello all. I had a girdlestone procedure done in 2018. I use a walker or sometimes an electric wheelchair for outdoor events but otherwise get along fairly well. We have recognized the lack of information and support there is for individuals facing this procedure and especially how to live afterwards. As a result I started a FB page I encourage all of you to visit. We have individuals from across the world who have found us and there is a plethora of information you can read. We are not medical professionals and do not provide medical advice.

Im new to this group and i love to hear that there are others like me out there. My story is that i have had 3 hip replacements and each have failed. Finally they decided to do a girdlestone procedure. Im only a week out of surgery and im interested in how everyone got along after a week. The doctor told me i would never walk again. From reading your stories it looks like most of you CAN walk.

Wow Joan! It sounds like you are doing well in terms of mobility, ask things considered. How in the world did you find the unicorn PT who is familiar with the Girdlestone procedure? Congrats on that. I had mine 6 months ago. No hope of getting another hip. My leg is still very unstable, "knocking around" in there all the time, as if it's dislocating but if course there is no joint to dislocate. Did you go through that phase, too?

@janeen17 I’m 11 weeks out. My “femur” has a mind of its own, moves laterally, and vertically. I asked my surgeon to order me a stabilizer brace. Have you or anyone on here used a brace?

Hi Girdlestone Patients! I just found you in my long list of Mayo blog? comorbidities. Thank goodness. My brain is good, body not.Technology, especially texting with a motorola stylus is crummy. Please excuse any typos,I try to edit. I had a rt hip replacement in Nov 2010.Within 2 weeks of suture removal,2 wks after the surgery,I noticed a oozing yellow spot coming from a suture hole. Total 10 surgeries,2 hrs from home,hubby,2 small pets,1 cat,1 dog. Was in total 3 hospitals,2 rehab places,Groshong central line in heart for 8 mos( terrifying!) I&D,then prosthetic removal, antibiotic spacer in/out every 5 or 6 weeks, etc.NOT MRSA,dr said," wish it was..we could get that!" Result: no hip,no prosthetic, leg 2" shorter,rt foot turn outward 45 degrees ish to the right.Only wear Birks as they slide on, can't reach to put on socks, laces, etc.Need aide to get into tub onto shower chair.Plus size, can't move much to walk much, etc.Use walker in house, with wheelchair for sitting at table, scooting with feet into kitchen. Can drive with rt shoe off. ( just cant walk to get out to go anywhere .need aide with wheelchair out of home. Can only walk about 30' without intense pain around bk rt waist/ ribcage area. Can only stand still for maybe 3 minutes w/o screaming.Renting, whchr won't work on carpeted bedrooms. MANY other issues. Finally was told he did a "Girdlestone procedure"..had brought in a " hip revisionist" newbie to apparently fix. Googled him.( newbie). now a 5 star in Boston now. My 1 visit to an Ortho PA, where I moved to west coast to be near only son 8 yrs ago said ,"you're my 5th case in 40 yrs! " Thanks for someone's LIFT place, will contact .I'd be glad to talk to any of you privately or help in any way.Don't know how to do that though.TIA. Is there a Facebook group, the only social I use, besides watching a few you tubes?
