Does anyone suffer from random hand cramping and finger contractures?

Posted by kalliope56 @kalliope56, Jun 15, 2023

I am at wit’s end with a problem I’ve been having with my hands and fingers. My hands randomly have spasms and my fingers randomly contract. In particular, the fingers that contract are my index finger in my middle finger and occasionally my thumb. My fingers curl inward towards my palm and will not release for a few minutes. I saw a hand specialist last week who took x-rays and checked me for carpal tunnel and trigger finger, and said I did not have any major issues with my hands. He thought the issue might be spine/nerve related and he referred me to a neurologist. The neurologist ordered blood tests to see if I had any vitamin/mineral deficiencies and also ordered a thyroid test. All results have come back normal. Something has got to be causing the painful spasms and the finger contractions. The neurologist prescribed Gabapentin, and I just started taking it. Has anyone else had experience with random hand spasms and finger contractions?

I have been having hand cramping for some time now. My hand surgeon took one look at my x-rays and said he had to do nerve releases on each arm under general anesthesia. I used to trust him.

I do trust my neurologist. He looked at the nerve conduction test my hand surgeon had ordered and noted that (a) it was done by a physician who had retired from the Mayo Clinic where he had led the practice and was terrific and (b) he didn't think the ulnar part looked that bad.

My neurologist completely trusts a surgeon at the Mayo Clinic. I have an appointment with her in a little over a month.

Let us know! My fingers will suddenly cramp tightly and I have to pull them to straighten out. Is that your symptoms?

Many I know swear by pickle juice!
I love pickles, so I'm going to try drinking it sev X wk, maybe 1/4 c ?
I also know turmeric powder works for inflammation, it has helped w/ my arthritis in hands, knees. I usually mix it in my scrambled eggs, egg salad, soups , salad dressing, stews. But make sure you also add sprinkling of blk pepper to help absorb it

OMG! It's 345am. Right hand index finger cramping so bad the last 40 minutes! I try topical Diclofenac which helped in the past within a few minutes. Not this time. So I go to rinse it off after any 5 minutes. I also felt that warm water helped in the past but it wasn't. I don't know why but something said try cold water. Worked instantly! Look at me typing away! So I don't know if the combination of CBD roll on oil and Diclofenac topical finally worked out the cold water. We shall see!

@beancat425 40 min is a long time to cramp! Ouch! I’ve been sticking with pickle juice shots for quick resolution.
