Pulsing burn on top of foot

First a little rant...As soon as drs read I am diabetic, it's automatically diabetic neuropathy, which kind of passes me off, as they imediatly stop any testing / investigation...
But I do get the standard neuropathy type sunburn type feeling on the bottoms of my feet and used to get the needle stabs in my toes. But taking R-lipoic acid and benfotiamine has stopped the needle sticks and made my sunburn feeling tolerable.
The new thing now, is at roughly 9pm at night I start getting this pain like someone burned me with a cigarette (only description I could think of) but it comes on the top of my left foot about 2 inches up from my small toe. The strange part is it burns for a couple seconds, fades off and the 10 seconds later , bang it burns again. It's like clockwork all night. You lie there in anticipation of the next burn, then around 9 am it stops. A very odd thing. I'm wondering if anyone else gets the repetitive pulse type burning pain.
I'm thinking I can use something to numb it, so I can get some sleep. I did try some orthogel last night that did nothing.. (Mainly menthol) was thinking something like solonpas with lidocaine? What will numb this enough so I can sleep.

Out of a let's try this, I had some chloroseptic spray (for sore throats) in the medicine cabinet..... I sprayed .that on... instant relief, no more pain. It has phenol in it, but it's a numbing agent, so I'm going to go buy some solonpas and try that tonight. Lidocain plus something else... That red spray made a mess !!!
