@albertlc13 You are very welcome, I'm glad I could help. Unfortunately, I did not have anyone to tell me about these issues, and I came up with my method with my wife. That leads me to another part of having this surgery, as I mentioned in my original post you saw, physical therapy. It's very important to discuss this with your surgeon and/or primary doctor. I was not given any instructions for physical therapy, only the BLT warning for the first 6 weeks after surgery. I've been on my own since January, still trying to figure everything out along with my wife.

1 Reaction@marcd2k - thanks for sharing. I'm going in for ALIF L5-S1 with Pedicle Screws, scheduled for 23 July. So reading your post has been enlightening. Thanks.

You will be given a brace to wear for 2-3 months and that is very helpful. I just had L4-L5, L5-S1 fusion 10 weeks ago, this is my second fusion in 18 months. The first did not go well but this time with a different surgeon it is much better. I saw the surgeon last week and I can start gradually bending and getting back to normal. I will be honest the first two weeks post op is very painful but it gets better with time. Please let us know how it goes.

1 ReactionHas this fusion stopped your pain? I assume you have problems with L3-L4 and probably other back issues. How much of your back pain has been addressed? Is the less pain worth the two surgeries and recoveries? I have trouble with T12 through S1 and am concerned that not enough pain will be removed by fusion of one or two joints...
@lchop When you say it failed horribly, what does this mean?
My surgeon never said too much about pt. Did some basic pt after the surgery but never told to continue pt to build up the muscle strength. I am post 16 months from l3/l4 l4/l5 and just started a new pt regiment to build back muscle strength
Am I understanding that you had several spine surgeries? Have you had any in the T5 -7 area? And have you or do you know anyone that has had radiation in that area after surgery? I had a fusion done April 13 from T3 all the way to T9 and now they want to do radiation and I’m really worried about my esophagus aorta valve.
I am scheduled for an ALIF to fuse L5S1, complete with Pedicle Screws on 20 July, @ldpdrrx. The purpose is to relieve sciatica (left leg getting weaker, commensurate with significant aching in the glute, left lateral quad, calf and foot). I'll be off work for 2 months, and the fusion is expected to be complete (strong) after approx 1 year.
I had spinal decompression surgery on January 27th, 2025 to relieve the pain, etc. of lumbar spinal stenosis. Now, about 17 months later, while the pain has lessened, it has not gone away and I walk only with a walker. What I did not have pre-surgery are: numbness in my right lower leg, urinary incontinence, steady ED, and worst of all, kyphosis of my lumbar spine, making it impossible for me to stand fully straight without pain, to stand at all for more than, say, one minute, or to walk unassisted without excruciating lumbar pain that radiates from my right groin area down to my right knee. The orthopedist who referred me for an MRI In May 2026 says the most likely treatment will be a fusion surgery (L2-L5). I'm an 81.5 year old male, and I'm terrified . Physiotherapy has helped, but not enough.
