Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots. Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?

Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?

Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@becsbuddy We had a good walk. Yes, we are fortunate that where we live, we have birds and beautiful trees with feel good aromas. Chance , a rehome black pug, needs to loose weight, and I have to walk to strengthen my bones health😰. I like the idea that we could walk to markets, restaurants like the way you described. Where I came from we did that. But I’m thankful that I still could do a lot of things on my own. You have a wonderful day.

@peri5 It’s so nice to have you walking with us! I think the veteran walkers are paying lots of attention to Mayo Connect and not adding responses. They’re still walking, just not writing. I have to started paying attention and trying the hills near me. Gave all that up after i got my autoimmune disease. The senior residence we moved to has hills all around. We’re at the base of the Rocky Mountains so hills are as frequent as sunny days! There are 3oo+ sunny days here so sometimes cloudy days are welcome! I’ll keep on walking and you keep walking!

Besides walking with Chance, I also take meditation online through our community college at night twice a week. It’s been helping me positively overcome overthinking.

Hello,
I am glad I found this.
I used to love to walk on mowed trails on private land near me that was allowed.
The owner died, his adult children have taken over and have now prohibited it.
I also walked the Erie Canal trails in NY state.
But recently women have been threatened on those trails by a man. (He is being dealt with by authorities.)
There are other multiple public places to walk. But with the rise in the tick population and possible threat from unsavory characters, I honestly don’t dare walk or hike anywhere outdoors.
I live in a 62 unit apartment building and now walk the halls and climb a lot of stairs indoors.
But it is not the same as walking in nature which I loved to do.

I live in the country. My mailbox is a !/4 mile uphill from the house. I walk with my dog and she goes twice as far to check out the scents while I enjoy trying to identifying the various flowers along my driveway. Sometimes we will walk to the nearest STOP sign, another 1/4 mile. The road is an down/up road with the far end a little higher than where the mailbox is. My milage is either 1/2 or a full mile. I have Dandelions, Astors, Daisies, Purple Vetch, both White and Pink Clover, Golden Rod, three different kinds of Milkweed for the Monarchs, and other flowers that I don't know yet.

I know the definition of a weed is a flower in the wrong place. I didn't plant them but the Master Gardener did. None of the plants are weeds.

@misseygirl How terrible to feel that you can’t walk outside because of these characters, but I know exactly what you mean. I walk in neighborhoods and enjoy everyone’s gardens. Is there anyone in your apartment complex you could convince to be your walking partner? That’s what I need! But I walk too slowly or not slow enough. Oh well, guess I’ll just continue my slow, solitary, steps. I love being out so walking by myself isn’t really a problem.

Walking through my woods is more of a challenge today than it used to be. We play a game, Live Adventure Role Playing (LARP) with both my family and friends in New York State near the other Rochester andwe started by playing with a group in Columbus, OH, who caught the bug from the NY group. The rules are simple, play nice, nobody gets hurt, no booze, just improv. Each game has a game designer with some help, a kitchen staff who plan the meals, and prepare the food. Most people camp out, but some really do require a bed and I have a few.

I found that LARPing is played all over the world. The themes are usually Medieval but not always. There is a group that bought a real Battleship and do games on it. Another group has a sailing ship (pirates). In Wichita, KS, a LARP group takes over "Cowtown" and everyone is a cowboy or early settler.
One theme was to celebrate the Queen Birthday and no one was supposed to die, but several did. The game has a "Land of the Dead" where one goes and gets a special assignment and then reenters the game. Sometimes during the game the unexpected happens and the game goes in a different direction that the Game Designer had intended, That is the real fun!

My Amaryllis is blooming a bright dark red! The Milkweed is starting to bloom with some white and some pink. The hot, wet weather is causing this. Makes for fun walks!
