What are the side effects of gabapentin?

Posted by cate321 @cate321, Mar 22, 2025

I'm taking 300mg 3x day for nerve pain in my leg due to a ruptured disc. It's helping but not completely. I've started to have memory problems that I haven't had before. And the other , more troubling thing that has happened is I'm having trouble speaking. I can't pronounce some words and end up saying something else. Or I say a word similar but not correct. Also, swallowing food has become a challenge. Do you think this is from gabapentin or something else? Thank you for reading and responding!

No issues with gabapentin that I’m aware of or could identify after several years. I’m 83 years old and there has sometimes been an increase in aches and pain for short durations. I’ve been guessing it is part of the aging process. I have chronic lower back pain from 3 back operations that gabapentin doesn’t help at all.

I've been taking 3600mg of gabapentin a day to dull the pain in my feet for about 3 years now, and all 3 things that you mentioned are things that I occasionally have to deal with. Sometimes my short term memory just disappears. I'll be in the middle of a sentence, and then I forget what I was even talking about.
I also have trouble speaking sometimes as well, I'll know what I want to say, but the words don't come out right, I have to stumble for them, and it's embarrassing. And I occasionally have trouble swallowing, even without trying to swallow food or any liquid. Just the act of swallowing takes some effort.

I've just assumed that these were the kinds of things that happen as you get older, I turned 66 last month. I'm the oldest member of my family now that our parents are gone, as well as our older sister who passed away in 2020, so I don't have anyone to talk to about this. They might be side effects from my medication, but how would you determine something like that? I'm taking 12 prescription drugs currently for multiple issues, including neuropathy in my feet.
I think I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place.

@mrmacabre I've been taking 100, 300 and 600 for different issues also and I find myself with almost all of the same reactions you suffering. Had both knees replaced and right hand already done for Carpel tunnel and getting ready to have the left one done. Didn't have any of these issues until I started the pills.
Gonna see my doctor to see what is happening. Will update after, please take care of you.

I also take gabapentin for lumbar back pain. I do think it helps with nerve pain, but it does not help with pain associated with degenerative disc disease and arthritis. I have both conditions and I’m awaiting spine fusion surgery. I too have had multiple discectomies and a lamanectomy for bulging discs and pressure on nerves. Now I have stenosis where a vertebrae has moved and is pressing on my spinal cord.

ED is one. Ask me how I know. Same for its cousin PreGabalin.

Not sure if this was suggested. See your or a doctor (ENT, neurologist, ...), whichever, soon. You might have an allergic reaction that swells (edema) your throat passage.

I'm on gabapanton 300mgs twice daily,I honestly don't see where it helps much other then makes me a lil spacey headed. I have had a vulvectomy from having vulvadynia which is nerve damage under the skin in vulva area at the age of 35, scientists have been studying it but don't have an answer as to what causes it. Unfortunately it came back 2 months later when new nerves grew to replace the old ones.i'm 59 yrs old, was told my CT scan shows I have the back of a 90 yr old from arthritis being so bad from the top to the bottom.I have been on gabapanton since the age of 35,in all honesty I take it because it helps me sleep longer and better at night. wish it helped the nerve damage from vulvadynia.I agree with the person who said you may be having a allergic reaction to it if your having a hard time swallowing like edema, your throat passage..hoping you find the answers your looking for sweetie but please bring these side effects to your Dr's attention, they need to know what your going thru on gabapanton.Saying a prayer for you🙏

I'm hesitant to take gabapentin because I'm worried about side effects. I suffer with severe abdominal adhesions and nerve pain. Dr recommended I try the gabapentin. I don't see how it will help my discomfort. The adhesions dig into my stomach, ribs, pelvic area. I can't sit upright or bend forward. It's so tight and constricting. It's the worst

I was given gabapentin for muscle pain in 2010. I took first 2 days dose then 3rd day increased and I ended up with aphasia! It lasted for approximately 5-6 hours. I could not speak at all. Just stood looking around. I knew in my head what I wanted to say but could not make a sound. My husband kept asking me questions however I could not react. (That was the quietest 5-6 hours my husband ever had, per my husband!) I won’t be taking any form of it in the near future! Best of luck to you. I’ve heard it’s helped a lot of people with pain.

I get constipation with Gabatentin and Trazodone but what else can I do. Seems all pain meds do this.
