To whipple or not to whipple? What is quality of life like after?
Am 56 years old in generally good health, though with type 2 diabetes. Have a very large (41mm) adenoma in my duodenum. It's not malignant but is of a type that will almost certainly become malignant, it will eventually block my duodenum. I also have abnormal cells in the bulb of my duodenum, so endoscopic removal is not an option. Surgeon is suggesting a full Whipple, without preserving the pylorus. Realize that I'm blessed that things are pre-malignant but also didn't have a Whipple on my bingo card at this point in my life. Whole process has moved very quickly - started with anemia in mid-October and am looking at a potential surgery date in January. Would appreciate anyone's perspective on living with a Whipple and on quality-of-life post recovery.

Greetings, We are on our way to the hospital for the port to be inserted. When I find out, I will let you know about the chemo. Yes Jamie was having a difficult time eating. He still does, but its getting better. I drive him nuts offering food.

1 Reaction@tomrennie All went well. Now waiting for the oncologist to set up Jamies visits. Jamie is my hero. He is all I have. My beautiful daughter Jennifer passed away 2009. She like Jamie are gifts. I am making an appointment with my primary for something to help me through this.

1 ReactionHi! I am 1 year out from Whipple for head of pancreas adenoca. I take creon three times a day. No pain but I am always aware of my abdomen. The same feeling you get when you don’t know if you’re going to pass gas or stool. No diarrhea, no incontinence. A small price to pay, overall I feel great considering my diagnosis!

2 ReactionsI was diagnosed May 2025 had Whipple September 2025. Currently doing well. Was recently told that I have a hernia and now I’m wearing a belly band.
Prior to Whipple surgery the stent needed to be replaced every few weeks was very uncomfortable.
Whipple tolerable.
