Has anyone had a lumbar nerve ablation procedure done? Was it helpful? And, importantly, was it painful? Did it make your pain worse for awhile? Did you have any sedative, pain medication or versed for the procedure. I have one scheduled and I am getting nervous.

Been discussed here a lot. It's a tossup as to whether or not it will help. I assume they have determined that yo are a good candidate. I am not. First medial branch block didn't give enough pain relief. GL

Hoping others here such as @domiha @megc @paulbse @wendyhobbie will chime in about any nerve ablations they have had and the helpfulness of them, as well as any pain involved. They can also address if it made the pain worse at first. I'm sure they will understand and empathize with your feeling nervous before having one. I'd also like to invite @jenniferhunter to join in this discussion, if she wishes.
Sounded like you have some ideas about how the ablation might go. Have you talked to others who have had a nerve ablation, @joycelen? If so, what have they said about it?
@joycelen At one point, I was considering the nerve ablation, but then my pain in my neck and my lumbar seemed to lessen, so I have put it off for now. I have talked to some people who have had great success from it.... and a few who said it didn't change much. Each of us reacts differently, I suppose. I'm not sure about sedation, but I'm sure you will be well taken care of when you have your ablation. And I am also sure that the doctors KNOW that probably most of their patients are very nervous about the procedure, especially the first time. If the doctor does not use light sedation, perhaps they could give you something like valium or xanax to take beforehand just to help calm your anxiety during the procedure. I wish you all the best. I had 2 nerve ablation on my l4 l5 spine. They help enormously to keep you moving however the nerves do come back slowly around 6 months to a year.
So you will need to repeat if the pain returns. I had no pain meds except what they gave the day of to relax on the procedure. I walked out fine and was recovered a week later to go back to walking.

Yes, Ihave had it done. It hurts for a couple of days then it quits. It did help a lot. I have it done on the SI joints both sides. Yes, my doctor puts me to sleep in an out patient hospital or he has a mini surgical room in his office he puts people to sleep.
