First Consult with Urologist Tomorrow
One month and a half ago I got the results of my annual VA blood test back, which included a psa of 11.80. This was a big jump of more than double my psa of 5.17 the previous year. My Primary Dr. Recommended a biopsy, but thr VA Urological Clinic couldn't fit me in for 3 months and I was refered to an outside Urologist. My first consult with the Geisinger Urologist, actually a physician's assistant, is tomorrow. Since I intend to advocate for myself rather than just agreeing to whatever is suggested, I would like any suggestions about what I might ask during this initial consultation. Thanks.

Your initial path will be information gathering with the physician’s assistant.
- Urine analysis for possible infection increasing PSA
- Digital Rectal Exam to get an idea of how enlarged prostate is and if any possible lesion can be felt
- Then the two of you can discuss an MRI. MRI needs to be performed and evaluated before a Biopsy.

7 ReactionsWelcome, so sorry you had to find your way here and you're right, that's a big PSA jump for a year but doesn't necessarily mean cancer. Other causes of rising PSA should be discussed but you can expect; repeat PSA to confirm, urinalysis, DRE, MRI, Biopsy in that order. There are other tests to determine the likelihood of PCa, but truth be told, the only way to be sure is biopsy. Others will chime in with details.
You'll probably find this helpful...you'll be bombarded with acronyms.

2 ReactionsEcho mjp! Also, prayers for you 🙏🏽 Once you accept and understand that it is one thing at a time, then you can rest in the moments. The course as he lays out allows you to breathe and go step by step. Glad you could be referred to a quicker urology consult.
