Obstructive hydrocephalus that appeared to be Parkinson's
I had been having symptoms such as shuffling, falling for no apparent reason, balance issues and not being able to rise from a sitting position. It was thought that I had Parkinson’s based on my symptoms, but any tests done were not conclusive. I was finally diagnosed with obstructive hydrocephalus, had placement of a shunt and I am a new person. Not only have the physical symptoms disappeared, but my severe depression (seeking death) has also disappeared. I was told I had aqueductal stenosis/hydrocephalus back in 1987, but the symptoms became obvious in the last 7 years. Be your own advocate and keep going to doctors if Parkinson’s has been ruled out. Sorry for the long post, but if I can help just one person, it is worth the time to post.

It absolutely is worth it, and thank you for your post. I was not aware of this condition in adults, only rarely in children, so my husband’s diagnosis was a surprise. I’m very glad to have found this group. Hearing of others successes in treating this condition has given us hope he’ll get his life back after the shunt surgery.
Thank you for the information. I am currently being evaluated for possible NPH. I feel like I’m walking on a boat for several months. My gait has been odd for several years nd my legs feel so heavy when walking. It talked such a long time to see a DR now. It’s frustrating. My neurology appointment is in 2 weeks after waiting 6 weeks. I hope he can help me. I am miserable.

I am sorry to hear about your symptoms of gait and balance problems. This must be difficult. What other symptoms, if any, are you currently having?
Will this be your first appointment with the neurologist? On Connect, we have a discussion group regarding keys to a successful doctor's appointment. Here is the link.

As you read the posts (and watch the video), you will get some ideas on how to use the appointment as effectively as possible. For example, list the symptoms you have had and what you have tried to control them. Also, make a list of times when the symptoms are the worst. For example, are your symptoms more pronounced later in the day?
Will you post again and let me know how you are doing?
