TMJ From A Fall. Anyone Have Any Suggestions
About 6 weeks ago I fell backwards and hit my RIGHT cheek on the metal leg of a folding chair.
The fall resulted in me having TMJ on my LEFT side.
I am getting treatment from an Orofacial Dentist. She is giving me trigger point injections, and stretching movements. They did a CAT scan and measured me for “appliances”.

Susan,
I have chiropractic adjustments for occasional TMJ. The relief is immediate and long lasting. Though everything is different with an injury, it might be worth a try.
That's a pretty scary fall.

1 ReactionI once had been treated with steroids and a muscle relaxer (2 rounds) for TMJ pain... It provided only very short term relief as the underlying tissue never healed. I finally got into a dentist who gave me the advice I needed to get over this, though it took a good couple of months to heal.
1. Round the clock low dose ibuprophen to reduce inflammation.
2. Every two hours do gentle range of motion exercises with your jaw... Not overdoing the movements, especially at first. You could probably find this on YouTube.
3. Morning and evening moist heat compresses to improve circulation.
4. Eat only very soft foods for a while. Start with mashed potato consistency for a couple of weeks and very slowly work your way into softer foods. Be careful not to overdo things like talking (on the phone) for long periods etc. Do what you can to limit those repetitive movements that can cause more strain to that joint.
I hope that you are able to take ibuprophen... I was on it for a couple of months but I know not everyone can do this. This treatment finally worked for me. It is so painful! I hope you are able to find relief soon!

1 ReactionI forgot to add... my dentist also had me wear a mouth guard at night which helped my pain level at night and in the morning so much!
