At 5 years of age, I had an accident and was in a coma for 10 days. All seemed fine after I was conscious again, but in my teenage years, when hormonal changes took place, I started to experience what today I know are auras (focal aware seizures). I'd had many regular EEGs in my teenage years, and all were negative for epileptiform waves or seizures, just like your grandson. It was only much later, when my auras evolved to more severe complex partial seizures and I underwent sleep deprivation for an EEG, that I got the diagnosis of temporal lobe epilepsy and later a very mild mesial temporal sclerosis on my left hippocampus. After being diagnosed with epilepsy, I learned that a clean EEG doesn't exempt one from having epilepsy — it just means that by the time the EEG was performed, no epileptiform waves were detected.
So based on my own experience, I believe it'd be wise to seek another opinion.
Has your grandson been put through sleep deprivation for his EEGs? May I ask how old he is today?
